Half a million people. Ten islands. One massive dream. Shock the World of Soccer!
Cape Verde’s World Cup campaign is already etched in history, but the Blue Sharks are now on the cusp of something truly miraculous. After shocking the globe with a draw against a Spanish side ranked 65 places above them, the tournament debutants have done it again by holding two-time winners Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in Miami.
Written off by pundits and facing down South American heavyweights, Cape Verde didn’t just survive; they were creative, entertaining, and utterly fearless. Now, they are in serious contention for a place in the knockout stages.
Taming the South American Heavyweights
From the very first minute, Cape Verde refused to park the bus. They employed an attack-minded, high-tempo game that left Uruguay on the ropes. The history-making moment arrived when Kevin Pina stepped up to a 30-yard free-kick. As the Uruguayan wall jumped and parted, Pina’s arrowed effort found a path straight through the middle, blasting past keeper Fernando Muslera.
Back in the archipelago’s capital of Praia, the goal triggered absolute jubilation.
Though Uruguay eventually leveled the score, Cape Verde’s Helio Varela responded with a moment of pure class. Capitalizing on a defensive gift, Varela produced a deft touch to round a stranded Muslera before stroking the ball into the back of the net. From there, the Blue Sharks deployed the same steely defensive determination that shut down Spain, holding on for a crucial point while still hunting for a third goal.
The Viral Hero in Goal
While no heroics were needed to the degree they were against Spain, 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha remained a towering presence, limiting Uruguay to just two shots on target.
Vozinha’s life has transformed overnight. Before the Spain match, he had 40,000 Instagram followers. Today? He boasts more than 15 million.
“They will be checking their phones to see how many followers they have,” joked former Wales defender Ashley Williams on BBC One. But the sweetest moment for Vozinha wasn’t on social media. While his mother was unable to attend the Spain match due to the high costs of obtaining a US visa, she was finally present in the stands in Miami, treated to an enthralling display by her son on the game’s biggest stage.
Pundits Forced to Rewrite the Script
Going into the match, BBC One pundits Ashley Williams and former South Africa striker Benni McCarthy both predicted a Cape Verde loss. Today, they are eating their very words!
McCarthy admitted he has a “new lease of respect” for the team:
“They really came out to play. They were sensational. I thought they were brave. The only thing that’s needed is working on their final-third entry, that composure… I think they’ve won a lot of people’s hearts after this performance.”
Williams took it a step further, calling it the “most entertaining” game he has covered at the World Cup so far.
As one Cape Verde fan at a US fan park told BBC Sport: “Everybody doubted us, everybody thought we weren’t going to make it. We’re here now.”
The Path to the Knockouts
Unbeaten in their first two games, Cape Verde’s destiny is entirely in their own hands.
Group H Standings (Top 3):
| Team | Played | Points |
| Spain | 2 | 4 |
| Uruguay | 2 | 2 |
| Cape Verde | 2 | 2 |
Under the expanded World Cup format, the top two sides in each group progress automatically, alongside eight of the 12 best third-placed teams. This means a win against Saudi Arabia on Saturday (01:00 BST) will seal progression.
Saudi Arabia previously drew 1-1 with Uruguay but were dismantled 4-0 by Spain.
“I think this performance gets them a win against Saudi Arabia,” McCarthy noted. Williams agreed: “They’ll be going into the Saudi Arabia game with their tails up thinking ‘we can qualify here’.”
If they pull it off, it will be a historic statistical anomaly. Cape Verde is currently ranked 63rd in the world. In the history of the tournament, only two teams ranked lower have ever advanced to the knockouts: Nigeria (74th in 1998) and Russia (70th in 2018).
The 525,000 citizens of Cape Verde are daring to dream. The rest of the world is just enjoying the ride and cheering the darlings of 2026 FIFA World Cup!.
