The political space has been set on fire following a jaw-dropping and highly controversial declaration by the Honourable Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. Speaking live on national television, the former Ebonyi State Governor threw caution to the wind, issuing a direct and unapologetic threat to the entire South-East region ahead of the 2027 general elections: Back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, or watch all federal projects in the region come to a dead halt!
In what political analysts are already calling one of the most brazen political ultimatums in recent Nigerian history, Umahi made it crystal clear that the people of the South-East have zero room for negotiation when it comes to the 2027 presidential ballot.
“No Tinubu, No Infrastructure!”
Umahi, known for his unvarnished delivery, did not mince words. Chronicling the ongoing infrastructural works approved by the Tinubu administration—including the monumental Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Second Niger Bridge access roads, and the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway—the Minister laid down a heavy condition for their completion.
According to the Minister, the massive capital being pumped into the region is not a free gift, but an investment that demands absolute political loyalty. He boldly warned that if the South-East fails to deliver its massive voting bloc to President Tinubu, he will personally ensure that works in the region are abruptly stopped.
“Every Igbo man must vote for Tinubu or else I will stop any project in the South-East. The South-East is for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and no one is going to deceive us. All our votes will go to him. Seeing is believing.”
“You Have No Right to Vote Anyone Else”
Taking the rhetoric a step further, Umahi declared that the South-East demographic literally has no right to cast their ballots for any other candidate in 2027. Painting the President as a political “master” who has adequately remembered the Igbo people in his infrastructure drive, the Minister emphasized that returning the favor is not a choice, but an absolute “must.”
He argued that the sheer volume of federal resources currently being channeled into the South-East automatically revokes the region’s right to align with opposition figures. For Umahi, the equation is simple: Tinubu is building your roads, so Tinubu owns your votes.
“2027 is Not the Turn of the Igbos”
In a move that is sure to infuriate prominent Igbo political leaders and groups pushing for regional representation at the highest level, Umahi completely shut the door on the possibility of a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in the upcoming election.
Addressing the long-standing agitation for an Igbo presidency, the Minister stated unequivocally that it is simply not yet the turn of the Igbo people to aspire to the highest office in the land. He advised his kinsmen to shelve their presidential ambitions, bury any thoughts of presenting a regional candidate, and queue entirely behind President Tinubu for his second term.
According to Umahi, the Igbo people will become President of Nigeria someday—but 2027 is strictly reserved for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He urged key regional opposition figures to swallow their pride, align with the President, and face the reality that challenging the incumbent will only result in the economic and infrastructural starvation of the South-East.
