CHEPOROR, KENYA — It started with a missing goat, but it ended with a modern-day gold rush that has fundamentally transformed a quiet stretch of grazing land in western Kenya.
When 33-year-old goat herder Manasse Lomachar set out to find his wandering livestock several weeks ago, he had no intention of becoming the catalyst for a massive mining frenzy. Wandering near a seasonal riverbed in the remote village of Cheporor, located in West Pokot County, Lomachar spotted a group of women washing mud and sifting through the sediment. Curious, he joined them and ultimately walked away with three grams of gold.
Lomachar recently sold his serendipitous find for 36,000 Kenyan shillings (roughly $280 or £205). In a rural region largely dependent on unpredictable farming and herding incomes, this was a life-changing sum. Once the surrounding communities found out about his sudden payday, word spread like wildfire.
The Rush to Cheporor
Almost overnight, the once-quiet bushland and rocky grazing fields of Cheporor were scarred by pickaxes, deep excavation pits, and makeshift mining camps. The rumor mill quickly amplified the discoveries, with tales of even larger gold hauls driving a mass migration to the area.
Local authorities estimate that at the peak of the frenzy, roughly 10,000 prospectors descended on the village. Fortune-seekers arrived not just from neighboring Kenyan towns, but from as far away as Uganda.
Mugisha Godfrey, an artisanal miner from Busia in eastern Uganda, spent 100,000 Ugandan shillings (about $27) just to reach the site after hearing rumors from a friend. “We sleep under the trees, and when morning comes, we continue working,” Godfrey said. “Sometimes we work both day and night”.
The gold craze was also compounded by a separate incident around August 1, when three boys herding livestock nearby reportedly dug up shiny, gold-like particles while playing in the dirt, further fanning the flames of the frenzy.
Digging for a Better Future
For many of the amateur miners, the grueling work of hacking into hard ground and washing soil in plastic bowls is driven by survival and the desperate pursuit of education.
Patrick Lokolia, a local farmer and herder from the neighboring village of Napawoi, joined the crowds with hopes of covering his children’s schooling. “I have children in school, and paying school fees has been a big problem for me,” Lokolia explained while taking a break from the digging.
Similarly, 18-year-old Abigael Chelengat traveled to the site with zero mining experience, driven by the hope of uncovering enough gold to pay for her own education and keep her younger siblings in school.
Is the Gold Real?
While local authorities confirm that gold is indeed being recovered at Cheporor, the true scale of the deposit remains a geological mystery.
Samuel Kiarie, the deputy commissioner of West Pokot County, noted that exaggerated rumors drew thousands of inexperienced people to the site. To determine if the area can support a commercially viable mining operation, truckloads of excavated material have been transported to the nearby town of Ortum for official processing and assessment.
Today, the initial surge has cooled, and the crowd has dwindled to roughly 2,500 prospectors. Many left after failing to strike it rich, but for those who remain, the glimmering hope of unearthing the next life-changing nugget keeps their shovels hitting the dirt.
