Nigerian Professor Jailed 70 Months in the US for Brazen $1.4m Charity Fraud

By ABT News International Desk

MICHIGAN, USA — In a shocking case of greed and betrayal of public trust, Dr. Nkechy Ezeh, a 61-year-old tenured professor of education, has been sentenced to 70 months in a U.S. federal prison. Her crime? Orchestrating a massive fraud scheme that siphoned $1.4 million in taxpayer and donor funds meant to provide early education and meals for vulnerable, low-income children.

The devastating fallout of her actions has left hundreds of underprivileged families in West Michigan without critical resources, while Ezeh lived a life of luxury on stolen funds.

From Acclaimed Educator to Convicted Fraudster

Dr. Ezeh was once celebrated as a pillar of her community. She was named the 2018 West Michigan Woman of the Year and served as the founder and CEO of the Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative (ELNC). The nonprofit was designed to advocate for and provide services—including meals and transportation—to preschoolers in underserved neighborhoods.

However, behind the facade of philanthropy, federal investigators uncovered a calculated operation to divert funds from the organization’s generous backers.

The Victims of the Scheme:

  • The federal government’s Early Head Start Program.
  • The U.S. Department of Education.
  • Three of Michigan’s most prominent charitable organizations.
  • The Ultimate Victims: Hundreds of needy children who lost access to vital educational and nutritional support as a result of her actions.

Lavish Trips and a Family Wedding

While the children her organization was supposed to serve went without, Ezeh used the stolen $1.4 million to bankroll an extravagant personal lifestyle.

According to the sentencing memorandum presented by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the stolen funds were used to:

  • Finance a lavish wedding for a family member.
  • Fund international vacations to Hawaii, Europe, and Africa.
  • Cover extensive personal luxury and living expenses.

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Timothy VerHey, did not mince words regarding Ezeh’s actions following the sentencing.

“Nkechy Ezeh’s greed is beyond reprehensible. She stole taxpayer and private-donor dollars meant for low-income children in our community. Instead of helping kids, she spent that money on herself… The stolen money could have supported hundreds of West Michigan children and their families.”

The Tragic Fallout and the Court’s Verdict

The financial devastation caused by Ezeh’s embezzlement proved fatal for the charity. As a direct result of the fraud, the ELNC was forced to permanently close its doors in 2023, stripping the community of essential preschool funding and resources.

During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Jarbou characterized Ezeh outright as “a fraud and a thief,” noting the extreme callousness of stealing from society’s most vulnerable demographic. Judge Jarbou ensured there would be no delays in justice, remanding Ezeh directly into custody to begin serving her sentence immediately.

The Final Penalty:

  • 70 Months in Federal Prison: A nearly six-year sentence without leniency.
  • Restitution: She was ordered to repay the full $1.4 million to the victims of her fraud.
  • Tax Evasion Penalties: An additional $390,174 must be paid to the IRS for unpaid taxes on her illicitly gained wealth.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) reiterated that this case stands as a severe warning to anyone attempting to misuse federal grant funds for personal enrichment. For Dr. Ezeh, a career built on early childhood education has ultimately ended behind federal bars.
