Media Visionary and CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

ATLANTA — Ted Turner, the outspoken billionaire who revolutionized the global media landscape by founding CNN and creating the 24-hour news cycle, has died at the age of 87.

The news was confirmed early Wednesday morning. Turner, a legendary figure in broadcasting, sports, and philanthropy, passed away surrounded by family. While a specific cause of death was not immediately released, Turner had revealed in 2018 that he was battling Lewy body dementia.

A Pioneer of the Airwaves Born Robert Edward Turner III, “Teddy” Turner transformed a struggling billboard business into a multi-billion dollar media empire. In 1980, he launched the Cable News Network (CNN), the first 24-hour all-news channel. Critics at the time mocked the idea, calling it “Chicken Noodle Network,” but Turner’s vision changed the way the world consumed information, making live, breaking news accessible at any hour.

Beyond news, Turner’s “Superstation” WTBS became a staple of American cable television, broadcasting classic movies and sports to a national audience.

“Captain Outrageous” in Sports and Sailing Turner’s competitive spirit extended far beyond the boardroom. Known as “Captain Outrageous,” he was a world-class sailor, winning the America’s Cup in 1977.

In the world of professional sports, he was the flamboyant owner of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks. Under his ownership, the Braves transformed from a struggling franchise into a national powerhouse, winning the World Series in 1995.

Philanthropy and the Environment In his later years, Turner became as well known for his checkbook as for his media deals. In 1997, he famously pledged $1 billion to the United Nations, a move that spurred other billionaires toward more aggressive philanthropy.

As one of the largest individual landowners in North America, Turner was a dedicated conservationist, working to restore bison populations and advocating for environmental protection and nuclear non-proliferation.

An Enduring Legacy Turner’s impact on the 21st century cannot be overstated. By shrinking the world through instant communication, he paved the way for the modern digital age. He is survived by his five children.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family which has requested privacy at this time.
