ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s political ambitions for the 2027 general elections have suffered a severe legal blow. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sacked the National Working Committee (NWC) and leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark, effectively nullifying Atiku’s presidential candidacy.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Peter Lifu declared the David Mark-led Caretaker Committee illegal. The court ruled that the process through which the leadership assumed control and subsequently conducted the party’s primaries which produced Atiku as its standard-bearer, was fundamentally flawed and void.
With this landmark ruling, all decisions, nominations, and actions taken by the sacked leadership have been set aside, leaving the ADC facing an administrative and electoral vacuum just as political alignments for 2027 gather momentum. WoW!!
Legal Fallout and Wider Implications
According to legal counsels involved in the suit, the sweeping judgment effectively leaves the opposition party without valid candidates across board, ranging from the presidency and governorships down to the Senate and House of Assembly seats.
The ruling comes barely 24 hours after Atiku held a high-profile campaign rally in Sokoto State as part of aggressive nationwide mobilisations ahead of the 2027 race.
Party Reacts
Despite the heavy setback, the ADC leadership has signaled an immediate legal counter-offensive. The party’s National Welfare Secretary, Nkemakolam Ukandu, who was joined as an interested party in the suit, disclosed that the camp is dissatisfied with the judgment and will immediately head to the appellate court to challenge the verdict.
