Across Sub-Saharan Africa, smallholder farmers often lose up to 40%–50% of their fruit harvests before reaching local or export markets. The cause is simple yet devastating: the high cost or total absence of reliable cold-chain infrastructure.
Two young Ugandan agricultural scientists from Makerere University in Kampala: Sandra Namboozo and Samuel Muyita have managed to turn this systemic vulnerability into an international breakthrough.
Their startup, Karpolax, manufactures a low-cost, biodegradable sachet packed with natural volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from cloves, lemongrass, eucalyptus, and wintergreen. Placed directly inside fruit crates, the sachet slowly suppresses ethylene production, the natural plant hormone responsible for rapid ripening, while inhibiting fungal growth and mold.
Proven Market Impact: Science Meets Scalability
In rigorous pilot trials conducted with Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), Karpolax extended the shelf life of fresh mangoes from 11 days to 33 days, remarkably tripling market availability without requiring a single watt of refrigeration.
| Metric | Standard (Untreated) | With Karpolax Sachet | Impact |
| Mango Shelf Life | 11 Days | 33 Days | 3x Freshness Extension |
| Average Fruit Loss | Up to 50% | Reduced by over 40% | Direct Income Retention |
| Infrastructure Needed | Cold Storage / Refrigeration | None (Crate Insertion) | Zero Grid Dependency |
| Fruit Compatibility | Rapid Spoiling | Mangoes, Bananas, Apples, Oranges | Broad Agricultural Reach |

International Recognition: European Patent Office Honors
The innovation’s real-world impact earned Namboozo and Muyita global recognition at the European Patent Office (EPO) Young Inventors Prize ceremony in Reykjavik, Iceland, where they were awarded the Community Healers Prize and a combined €20,000 cash grant. Chosen from over 450 global candidates, the duo’s work has already prevented over 1 million tonnes of fruit waste across regional supply chains.
“In Uganda, if farmers are not using Karpolax, they are not using anything… without refrigeration, products will go to waste. We have seen a reduction in wastage of over 40%.”
— Samuel Muyita, Co-founder of Karpolax
By commercializing locally sourced botanical solutions to solve global supply chain bottlenecks, Karpolax provides a scalable blueprint for climate-resilient agritech innovation across emerging markets.
