The Way the Cookie Crumbles: How a Fake Job Interview Drained $6.3 Billion from Binance

www.abtnews.net | Cyber Security & Digital Finance Report

It is officially the largest cryptocurrency heist in human history!

On October 29, 2026, hackers linked to North Korea’s notorious TraderTraitor (Lazarus Group) executed a precision attack that drained roughly $6.34 billion from Binance hot wallets across 10 separate blockchains in a matter of minutes.

The heist shattered the previous record: the $1.5 billion Bybit breach in February 2025, which was also linked to North Korean state-sponsored actors. This latest strike was more than four times larger.

Yet, despite the complex execution on-chain, the entire multisig breach didn’t start with a flaw in Binance’s underlying blockchain protocol. It started with simple human curiosity and a guy looking for a new job. WOW!

Phase 1: The Reconnaissance (June 2026)

The groundwork began months before a single dollar moved. In June, an engineer on Binance’s wallet team was searching for an AI tool and unwittingly installed a tampered version of Homebrew (a macOS package manager) via a malicious search engine ad.

Binance’s internal security monitors caught the intrusion quickly, swapped out the engineer’s laptop, and rotated all compromised passwords. Binance assumed the incident was contained.

However, during the brief window the attackers were inside, they extracted organizational mapping data—identifying who worked on the wallet infrastructure team, their specific roles, and their internal connections.

Phase 2: The Fake Recruiter Trap (September 2026)

Armed with employee names and roles, the attackers targeted a second Binance engineer (“Engineer B”) in September on a mainstream professional recruitment network.

The social engineering campaign was elaborate:

  1. First Round (HR Video Call): A fake recruiter conducted a video interview. To build trust, the caller shared a legitimate-looking social media profile complete with years of personal photos.
  2. Second Round (The “CEO”): The candidate was interviewed by an actor playing the company’s “CEO.” During this technical round, the applicant was asked to download a coding task assignment onto his work computer.

The coding test contained custom zero-day malware that bypassed Binance’s endpoint protection systems undetected.

Phase 3: Lateral Movement & Internal AI Tool Exploitation (October 2026)

On October 20, using access to Engineer B’s compromised computer, the attackers pivoted inside Binance’s corporate network.

They abused an internal AI assistant tool to elevate privileges and gain foothold access on the computers of two key wallet engineers:

  • Wallet DevOps Engineer A (the same employee targeted in June’s Homebrew incident)
  • Wallet Software Engineer C

Crucially, Engineer A held container deployment tokens with permission to spin up live code inside Binance’s system architecture.

Phase 4: The 20-Minute Blitz & EIP-7702

Nine days later, on October 29 between 5:15 PM and 7:56 PM UTC, the attackers logged into Engineer C’s machine, deployed a malicious container using Engineer A’s stolen credentials, and initiated an automated script.

At 8:05 PM UTC, funds began pouring out of Binance hot wallets—the exchange’s online wallets used for processing daily user withdrawals.

The hackers leveraged Ethereum’s EIP-7702 standard—an upgrade designed to grant smart-contract capabilities to standard externally owned accounts. By batch-authorizing signatures, the exploit script seized control of hot wallet signing rights and bypassed normal withdrawal limits.

The $25 Million per Minute Bottleneck

It took Binance approximately four hours to fully revoke the attacker’s wallet authorizations and halt the outflow (at 12:10 AM UTC on October 30). During the core 20-minute window of the assault, funds moved out at a rate exceeding $25 million per minute.

The delayed emergency containment was ironically caused by Binance’s security design:

  • Multisig Protection: Binance splits signing key authority across multiple geographically separated employees and independent systems to ensure no rogue employee can unilaterally move funds.
  • The Catch: Because power was decentralized, no single engineer or executive possessed an isolated “kill switch” to freeze the wallets immediately once the automated breach began.

The Aftermath and Customer Recovery

Despite the staggering theft, quick action by ecosystem partners helped limit total losses:

  • On-Chain Freezes: Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle froze nearly $3.0 billion in stolen USDT and USDC within hours of the attack.
  • User Coverage: Binance pledged to make all users whole out of its institutional reserves. By November 3, Binance confirmed it had already replenished 98% of the stolen digital assets.
  • Withdrawals Restored: Phased customer withdrawals resumed on November 1, processing over $4.65 billion in safe user payouts without incident.

Binance reported that it had successfully blocked 57 separate cyberattacks attributed to North Korean threat actors earlier in 2026 alone.
But as this historic heist demonstrates, sophisticated threat actors only need to succeed once and a fake job offer proved to be the master key and Binance’s greatest undoing!
