ABT NEWS EXCLUSIVE: The Truth Behind Japan’s “Penis Festival”

Internet rumors often paint Japan’s annual Kanamara Matsuri as a wild day of mandatory intimacy, but the reality is much more wholesome, and arguably more fascinating. Held on the first Sunday of April at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki, the “Festival of the Steel Phallus” is a vibrant Shinto celebration of fertility, safe childbirth, and protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

Instead of a free-for-all, attendees find a joyful, sex-positive street fair filled with tourists, locals, and families enjoying phallic-shaped lollipops and a welcoming atmosphere.

How Did It Come About?

The festival’s roots stretch back to the Edo period (1603–1868). Kawasaki was a busy stop along the Tokaido road, and sex workers from the town’s pleasure districts would visit the Kanayama Shrine to pray for prosperous business and protection from devastating STIs like syphilis.

The shrine’s specific dedication to the phallus stems from a wild piece of local folklore. According to legend, a jealous, sharp-toothed demon hid inside the vagina of a young woman, castrating her suitors on their wedding nights. Desperate, the woman sought help from a local blacksmith, who forged a steel phallus to break the demon’s teeth and banish it forever. To celebrate, the iron phallus was enshrined, and the Kanayama deities became revered protectors of both blacksmithing and sexual health.

How Popular Is It Today?

While the tradition faded in the late 19th century, it was revived in the 1970s by the shrine’s chief priest and has since exploded in popularity. What started as a niche local observance is now a massive public spectacle drawing up to 50,000 domestic and international visitors each year.

The main event is a lively parade featuring three massive mikoshi (portable shrines) carried through the streets:

  • The Black Mikoshi: An upright, polished black iron phallus carried by men.
  • The Wooden Mikoshi: The oldest of the three, reflecting ancient Shinto craftsmanship.
  • The Elizabeth Mikoshi: A massive, bright pink phallus donated by a local drag club called the Elizabeth Kaikan, traditionally carried by members of the LGBTQ+ community.

A Modern Social Purpose

Far from just being a quirky party, the modern Kanamara Matsuri serves a vital social cause. It has become a major event for promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity and sex positivity in Japan. Furthermore, all proceeds generated from the festival—including the sales of themed candies, carved vegetables, and souvenirs—are donated to HIV/AIDS research and prevention organizations.
