TOURISTS BEWARE!! Singapore Imposes Huge Fines On Those Playing Loud Music In Public Transport

By ABT NEWS | www.abtnews.net

Most bus passengers know how annoying it is when a fellow commuter blasts music or has a loud conversation on speakerphone. Now in Singapore, bus passengers could be fined hundreds of dollars for doing just that.

Starting September 23, 2026, Singapore has implemented strict new regulations targeting “disruptive” behavior on public buses and at transit interchanges. Under the new rules, commuters who play loud audio, rest their feet on seats, litter, or eat and drink on board can be slapped with a fine of up to S$500 (approximately US$392).

Crackdown on Disruptive Behavior

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) introduced these penalties to ensure a safer and more comfortable environment for everyone sharing public transport. The new bus regulations intentionally mirror the strict etiquette laws that have long governed Singapore’s MRT subway system.

For more serious infractions, the financial hit is even heavier. Offenses such as causing an obstruction, posing a danger to fellow commuters, or soiling any part of a bus or terminal carry a maximum penalty of S$5,000.

While rumors online have warned that loud music might directly risk a “jail term,” the official penalties outlined by the LTA are focused on these steep administrative fines. However, authorized bus operator staff and ticket inspectors are now empowered to issue official offense notices. Bus drivers are instructed to ask disruptive passengers to stop their behavior or alight from the vehicle—and if a passenger refuses to cooperate and escalates the situation, police assistance will be requested.

A Shared Space

“Public transport is a shared space, and every commuter has a part to play in ensuring a gracious and pleasant commuting environment,” the LTA noted.

Singapore is globally recognized for its rigorous enforcement of public cleanliness and order, and this latest move signals that authorities are entirely serious about protecting the peace of the daily commute.

For tourists and locals alike, the takeaway is simple: if you enjoy blasting your loud music on public transport, keep your headphones on in Singapore or be prepared to face the music financially.
