LORD HAVE MERCY!: AFRICAN HEAD OF STATE CHARGED WITH MURDERING HIS WIFE! – Toxic Marriage In High Places!

In the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, power struggles rarely stayed behind closed doors, but none were as deadly as the rift between Thomas Thabane and his estranged wife, Lipolelo.
Married in 1987, the couple drifted into a bitter separation by the mid-2010s while Thomas served as the Leader of the Opposition. Having moved out of the marital home, Thomas entered a customary marriage with a new partner, Maesaiah Ramoholi.
When Thomas won the June 2012 election to become Prime Minister, a constitutional crisis ignited over who was entitled to the official title, perks, and residence of the First Lady!

A Legal Battle Turned Lethal

Lipolelo refused to grant a quick civil divorce or step aside quietly. When Thomas attempted to strip her of state privileges to hand them to Maesaiah, Lipolelo took her fight to the High Court of Lesotho. The court ruled decisively in her favor: legally, Lipolelo remained the rightful First Lady until a formal divorce was finalized.

Just two days before Thomas was scheduled to be sworn in for his second term as Prime Minister on June 14, 2017, Lipolelo was ambushed while driving home in Ha Masana outside Maseru. Gunmen opened fire on her vehicle, killing her instantly while her companion survived. With Lipolelo dead, Thomas was sworn in as planned and legally married Maesaiah two months later.

Call Records and Gang Connections

For nearly three years, the investigation lay dormant—until police unraveled a paper trail that pointed straight to the prime minister’s doorstep. Forensic cell phone data revealed that on the night of the assassination, a call was placed from the murder scene directly to Thomas Thabane’s personal mobile phone. Further police affidavits alleged that Thomas and Maesaiah had hired hitmen from a notorious local Famo gang, paying them a down payment of roughly $24,000 (around 400,000 maloti) along with promises of government employment.

The Collapse of a Landmark Case

The shocking murder charges made Thomas Thabane the first sitting African head of government to be charged with murder. Facing massive public outrage, potential impeachment, and intense diplomatic pressure, he was forced to step down as Prime Minister in May 2020.

However, justice took an unexpected detour. In July 2022, Lesotho’s Director of Public Prosecutions officially withdrew all murder charges against both Thomas and Maesaiah Thabane. The prosecution cited an insurmountable obstacle: key state witnesses had vanished or refused to testify, leaving the court unable to proceed. Just like that!? Oh Dear!
