GENEVA / JOHANNESBURG — South African jurist Navi Pillay, the United Nations’ longest-serving human rights chief, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.”

At 85, Pillay’s legal and humanitarian career spans more than half a century of historic firsts. Before taking on major international roles, she established herself as a pioneering figure in South Africa, becoming the first non-white woman to serve as a judge on the country’s High Court after a distinguished career defending victims of apartheid laws.

Pillay’s most celebrated achievements came on the global stage, where she earned widespread praise for her unwavering focus on international justice and anti-genocide mechanisms. During her tenure on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, she helped forge a landmark legal precedent by establishing that systemic rape and sexual violence could constitute crimes against humanity and genocide under international law.

Her relentless advocacy for human rights accountability has also rendered her a central and often controversial figure in international affairs. Pillay has consistently challenged governments and political regimes over alleged rights violations. Last year, in an interview with The Guardian, she drew intense scrutiny after stating that she saw echoes of the Rwandan atrocities in Israel’s military campaign in Gaza—conclusions that Israel firmly dismissed.

Despite international debate surrounding her investigative findings, the Nobel Committee’s recognition cements Pillay’s position as one of the world’s foremost defenders of human rights and international rule of law.
