NORWICH, UK — Uchenna Okirie, a promising young Nigerian with a bright future has had his life tragically cut short in the United Kingdom.
A 28-year-old Congolese man, Benjamin Katabana, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years for the brutal and unprovoked murder of his Nigerian roommate, 33-year-old Uchenna Okirie.
The tragic incident, which unfolded in Norwich, has left the Nigerian community in the UK mourning the loss of Okirie, a bright former economics student at the University of East Anglia, affectionately known to friends as “Uche.”
According to the details presented at the Norwich Crown Court, the fatal attack occurred on November 22 at Somerleyton House on Somerleyton Street, Norwich, where both men resided. Katabana deliberately lured Okirie into the building’s communal corridor using WhatsApp messages.
When an unsuspecting Okirie stepped out while looking at his phone, Katabana launched a surprise attack, armed with a knife. CCTV footage captured the chilling moments leading up to the assault. Katabana stabbed the Nigerian graduate once before continuing the vicious assault, violently kicking Okirie in the head as he lay defenseless on the floor.
Despite emergency responses, Okirie was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 6:00 a.m. A post-mortem examination later confirmed that the fatal injury was a deep stab wound to the chest.
Following the cold-blooded killing, Katabana triggered the building’s fire alarm before walking directly to the Bethel Street Police Station. Upon arriving, he surrendered to authorities, allegedly telling officers, “I have killed someone, I think.” However, during subsequent police interviews, he refused to elaborate on his actions or motive, repeatedly answering “no comment.” The murder weapon was never recovered.
During the trial, Katabana attempted to plead guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, with his defense team citing a traumatic upbringing in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The jury rejected this plea, and he was convicted of premeditated murder, given evidence that he had armed himself with a knife prior to luring Okirie out of his room.
Presiding Judge Bate, who handed down the life sentence, highlighted Katabana’s violent history, noting five previous convictions for seven offenses, including a prior assault where he had similarly kicked a victim in the head while they were on the ground.
“You act impulsively and resolve issues through violence,” Judge Bate told Katabana during the sentencing. Katabana will serve a mandatory minimum of 20 years behind bars before being eligible for parole consideration.
Senior investigating officer Alix Wright of the Norfolk Constabulary condemned the killing, describing it as a “violent and unprovoked attack.”
“Benjamin Katabana deliberately lured Mr. Okirie into the corridor through WhatsApp messages where he intended to meet him, having already armed himself with a knife,” Wright stated, extending the department’s condolences to Okirie’s grieving family. “Our thoughts remain with them, and we hope this conviction provides a measure of justice for their devastating loss.”
Uchenna Okirie’s death marks the tragic loss of a young man whose pursuit of education and a better future in the UK ended in senseless violence.
