LONDON — Reform UK leader and Member of Parliament for Clacton, Nigel Farage, is facing a major parliamentary investigation following the revelation of a £5 million ($6.7 million) personal gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, has officially opened an inquiry into Farage over his failure to declare the enormous sum on the parliamentary register of interests. The opening of the probe comes just days after intense scrutiny surrounding the record-breaking payment, casting a long shadow over Farage’s political operations and sparking furious calls for accountability from political rivals.
The Source of the £5 Million Gift
The controversy centers on a staggering payment made to Farage in early 2024 by Christopher Harborne, a UK national based in Thailand who made his fortune in cryptocurrency and has been a primary financial backer of Reform UK.
According to reports, the £5 million transfer occurred weeks before Farage dramatically announced his intention to stand as a parliamentary candidate in Clacton for the 2024 general election. While Harborne has separately bankrolled Reform UK to the tune of £12 million in 2025 alone—including a historic £9 million single donation—Farage maintains that this specific £5 million was a “purely private, unconditional gift” meant solely to fund his lifelong personal security, arguing the UK state would not provide it for him.
Why is the Watchdog Probing Farage?
The investigation falls under Rule 5 of the MPs’ Code of Conduct. Under parliamentary rules, new MPs are required to conscientiously register all current financial interests, as well as any registrable benefits (other than standard earnings) received in the 12 months prior to their election, within one month of taking office.
Because Farage received the gift in early 2024 well within the 12-month window before his July 2024 election victory—critics argue he was legally bound to declare it upon taking his seat in the House of Commons.
The Conservative Party escalated the issue by formally complaining to the standards watchdog and the Electoral Commission, demanding answers on why a payment “more than most people earn in a lifetime” was kept off the official parliamentary register. Labour Party Chair Anna Turley has also blasted Farage, accusing him of believing there is “one rule for them, and another for everyone else.”
Farage’s Defense
The Reform UK camp has remained defiant. Farage insists that at the time the money was transferred, he was not directly involved in frontline politics and had no firm plans to run for parliament.
A spokesperson for Reform UK stated: “He has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken. We look forward to this being put to bed once and for all.”
The party’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, went even further on Sunday, shockingly claiming that for a high-risk politician like Farage, “frankly, £5 million is probably not enough” to cover lifetime security costs.
What Could Happen to Nigel Farage?
The stakes for Farage are incredibly high. If Parliamentary Commissioner Daniel Greenberg finds that Farage has breached the MPs’ Code of Conduct, the consequences could severely derail his parliamentary career.
Depending on the severity of the findings, the likely outcomes include:
1. A Formal Apology and Rectification: If the commissioner determines the omission was a minor or administrative error, Farage may simply be required to officially update his register of interests and issue a formal apology to the House of Commons.
2. Referral to the Commons Standards Committee: For a serious breach, which a £5 million undeclared sum is highly likely to be considered, the commissioner may refer the case to the Committee on Standards. This cross-party committee has the power to recommend harsh disciplinary action.
3. Suspension from Parliament: The committee could recommend that Farage be suspended from sitting in the House of Commons. He would be barred from debates, voting, and have his salary docked.
4. The “Nuclear” Option: A Recall Petition and By-Election Under the Recall of MPs Act 2015, if Farage is suspended from the House of Commons for 10 sitting days or more (or 14 calendar days), it will automatically trigger a recall petition in his Clacton constituency. If 10% of eligible voters in Clacton sign the petition, Farage would be unseated, triggering an immediate by-election where he would have to fight for his political life all over again.
Additionally, the Electoral Commission is currently reviewing whether the payment breached political finance laws, which could result in massive financial penalties for both Farage and Reform UK if the money is deemed an undeclared political donation rather than a personal gift.
As the standards probe officially gets underway, the establishment disruptor now finds himself directly in the crosshairs of the very parliamentary system he sought to infiltrate.
