WASHINGTON (ABT NEWS) — In a major geopolitical shift, the United States has secured a sweeping agreement with Denmark and Greenland, granting Washington expanded military presence and control over security developments in the autonomous territory.
Announced by President Donald Trump on September 18, 2026, the deal prohibits any US adversaries from establishing military bases in Greenland or making sensitive investments without American approval. The agreement, which has no expiry date, also guarantees the US permanent access, basing, and overflight rights.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, declaring the deal a “dream come true”.
What This Means for Global Security
This historic agreement fundamentally alters the strategic landscape of the Arctic and North Atlantic, regions that have seen increasing interest from powers like Russia and China.

Defusing Past Tensions
The announcement marks a dramatic turnaround in US-Danish relations. During his previous term, Trump’s suggestions that the US should simply buy Greenland caused a significant diplomatic rift, leading to public rebukes from Danish officials and even military contingency planning by Copenhagen.
This new deal, however, has been presented as a mutual victory.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the agreement respects Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside the right of Greenlanders to self-determination.
