BREAKING NEWS: “OUR HUSBANDS ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!” — SOUTH AFRICAN ZULU WOMEN STAGE DRAMATIC ‘BRA PROTEST’ TO PROTECT NIGERIAN AND ZIMBABWEAN SPOUSES

JOHANNESBURG/DURBAN — In a stunning and unprecedented display of defiance, a large group of South African Zulu women have taken to the streets in a “Bra Protest,” vowing to protect their foreign husbands from the rising tide of xenophobic attacks sweeping across the country.

The protest, which began late yesterday and continued into the early hours of Friday, May 8, 2026, saw women stripping to their undergarments—a traditional and symbolic gesture of extreme distress and a “mother’s curse” in many African cultures—to send a clear message to anti-migrant vigilante groups: “Hands off our husbands.”

“We Won’t Lose Our Families”

The demonstrators, many of whom are legally married to Nigerian and Zimbabwean nationals, were heard shouting emotional slogans throughout the night.

“They are our husbands, the fathers of our children, and the providers for our homes,” one protester, identified only as MaMkhize, told ABT NEWS. “This xenophobia is tearing our families apart. We were shouting yesterday and we are shouting today: Our Nigerian and Zim husbands cannot go anywhere! We will not lose them because of politics and hate.”

Context: A Nation on the Edge

The protest comes at a time of heightened tension in South Africa. Since April 2026, the country has been rocked by the “March and March” movement—a coalition of anti-migrant groups led by prominent figures such as Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and Ngizwe Mchunu. These groups have been conducting “clean-up campaigns” in cities like Durban and Johannesburg, which critics say are thinly veiled operations to harass and forcibly remove foreign nationals.

Just days ago, a planned “countrywide shutdown” on May 4th paralyzed major business districts, with groups like Operation Dudula demanding the immediate repatriation of all foreigners, regardless of their documentation status.

A Powerful Counter-Movement

While the anti-migrant rhetoric has dominated the headlines, this “Bra Protest” marks a significant shift in the narrative. By using their bodies as a shield, these Zulu women are highlighting the domestic reality of migration: the millions of cross-border families that form the fabric of South African society.

Legal analysts and human rights activists have noted that the targeting of foreign spouses often leaves South African women and children vulnerable to poverty and social displacement. The Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM) in Durban recently issued a statement calling for an end to the “senseless violence” that threatens to spiral into a repeat of the 2015 xenophobic crisis.

Security on High Alert

South African Police Service (SAPS) units have been deployed to monitor the protest areas. While the demonstration has remained largely peaceful, the symbolic nature of the “Bra Protest” has drawn massive crowds and social media attention, with the hashtag #ProtectOurHusbands trending across the continent.

As the “March and March” movement threatens to take its operations to Johannesburg next week, the stand taken by these Zulu wives serves as a major roadblock and a moral challenge to the anti-foreigner sentiment.
