In a major political development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has declared that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is actively working in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The revelation, which surfaced in a recent broadcast by Africa Independent Television (AIT), underscores a deepening cross-party alignment between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the dominant political force in the South-East.
“APGA is working for Tinubu in 2027,” Ojukwu stated, confirming widespread speculation about the party’s strategic direction under the current administration.
Bridging the Party Divide
Ambassador Ojukwu’s declaration carries significant weight due to her unique position in Nigerian politics. As the widow of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu—the founding father and eternal symbol of APGA—her voice dictates a massive portion of the party’s grassroots sentiment.
Her alignment with the President is not entirely surprising, given her prominent role in his administration. Appointed initially by President Tinubu as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and later elevated within the ministry, her inclusion in the federal cabinet was an early indicator of Tinubu’s effort to build a unity government and extend his political bridge into the South-East.
Despite serving in an APC-led federal government, APGA’s national leadership, including National Chairman Sly Ezeokenwa, previously clarified that Ojukwu remains a bonafide member of APGA. Her latest remarks, however, transition her role from a technocratic appointee to a political anchor for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
What This Means for 2027
This formal declaration of support signals shifting political tectonic plates in the South-East region, which has historically been a strong opposition battleground.
- South-East Consolidation: APGA’s backing could provide President Tinubu with the crucial 25% vote spread required in South-Eastern states, historically a challenging zone for the APC.
- Opposition Fragmentation: With APGA aligning with the ruling party, opposition parties like the PDP and the Labour Party (which heavily swept the region in 2023) may face a much stiffer contest in the upcoming election cycle.
- Cabinet Loyalty: The move reinforces the political return on investment for President Tinubu’s bipartisan cabinet selections, showing that appointing opposition figures can successfully deliver regional party machinery.
As political realignments continue, Ambassador Ojukwu’s explicit endorsement essentially draws the battle lines, making it clear that APGA’s political capital will be heavily invested in the success of the Tinubu administration over the next electoral cycle.
