NKPOR, ANAMBRA STATE — Nkpor community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State has been plunged into profound tension and grief following the tragic and controversial death of 80-year-old Paul Onwualu, a frontline contender for the community’s traditional stool.
The octogenarian was allegedly beaten to death during a Gestapo-style arrest by police officers reportedly attached to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja.
According to eyewitnesses and insider sources who spoke exclusively to ABT NEWS, the tragic incident unfolded when the officers, allegedly accompanied by individuals vehemently opposed to Onwualu’s kingship aspirations, stormed his residence. Under the guise of executing an arrest, the 80-year-old was reportedly subjected to severe physical assault until he slipped into a coma.
He was subsequently bundled into a waiting police vehicle to be taken to the Ogidi Police Station. However, as his condition deteriorated rapidly en route, he was diverted to the Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital in Ogidi, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
The deceased’s wife, Mrs. Anthonia Onwualu, while lamenting the sudden and brutal demise of her husband, confirmed that he was mercilessly beaten into a coma before being whisked away to an unknown destination, which ultimately led to his untimely death.
The Prevailing Crisis in Nkpor
The death of High Chief Paul Onwualu has blown the lid off the simmering kingship crisis that has deeply polarized the good people of Nkpor. For months, the battle for the traditional stool has created a volatile atmosphere, pitting brothers against brothers and fracturing the once-peaceful community.
This tragic escalation highlights a dangerous trend where state security apparatuses are allegedly being weaponized by local power brokers to intimidate, harass, and eliminate rivals. The involvement of FCID officers from Abuja, operating hundreds of miles outside their primary jurisdiction in a local chieftaincy dispute, raises serious red flags about the abuse of power and the commercialization of policing in Nigeria.
The mood in Nkpor is currently explosive. Angry youths and loyalists of the deceased are threatening mass protests, and the community is teetering on the brink of total anarchy. If left unchecked, this localized dispute could snowball into a major breakdown of law and order in the commercial nerve center of Idemili North.
Urgent Call to Action to Avert Anarchy
To step down the rising tension and prevent further bloodletting, ABT NEWS calls on the Anambra State Government and the Nigeria Police Force to take the following immediate actions:
1. Immediate Investigation and Arrest of Erring Officers: The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Anambra State Commissioner of Police must immediately identify, disarm, and arrest the officers involved in this fatal operation. A transparent and independent panel of inquiry must be set up to unmask the civilians who allegedly hired and accompanied the police to Onwualu’s home.
2. Intervention by Governor Charles Soludo: The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, must wade into the Nkpor crisis immediately. The state government should temporarily suspend all processes related to the filling of the Nkpor traditional stool until a full investigation into the murder is concluded and peace is restored.
3. Deployment of Neutral Security Forces: The Anambra State Police Command must deploy neutral, non-partisan anti-riot squads to Nkpor to protect lives and properties, ensuring that aggrieved youths do not take the laws into their own hands in retaliation.
4. Community Dialogue and Peace-Building: The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs must urgently summon all warring factions, community elders, and stakeholders in Nkpor for an emergency peace dialogue.
The murder of an 80-year-old man over a traditional title is a desecration of Igbo culture and a gross violation of human rights. Justice for Paul Onwualu is not just necessary to appease his grieving family, but it is the only way to restore the confidence of the Nkpor people in the law and prevent a complete descent into violence.
