The Silent Crisis: Why Bowel Cancer is Rising and How You can Stop It

By ABT News Health Desk

For decades, bowel cancer (colorectal cancer) was often dismissed as an “old person’s disease” or a “Western problem.” But the tide is turning, and the news is sobering. A recent report by the BBC has highlighted a “mysterious and unsettling” rise in bowel cancer cases among young people under the age of 50—a trend that is now being mirrored across the African continent as lifestyles shift.

In the UK, cases in the under-24 age group have skyrocketed by 75% since the 1990s. In Africa, where populations are traditionally younger, doctors are seeing an alarming increase in patients in their 20s and 30s arriving at clinics with advanced stages of the disease.

The message is clear: You are never “too young” to have bowel cancer.

The Mystery: Why Now?

While genetics play a role, scientists are pointing to the “Westernization” of global habits. According to research cited by the BBC, while obesity is a factor, it only explains about 13% of early-onset cases. Other culprits under the microscope include:

  • Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs): The shift from traditional “farm-to-table” meals to packaged noodles, sugary sodas, and processed meats.
  • Gut Health: Changes in our gut bacteria caused by the overuse of antibiotics and a lack of diverse fiber.
  • Late Diagnosis: In many African households, symptoms are often ignored or misdiagnosed until it is too late.

The “Piles” Trap: Symptoms Africans Should Not Ignore

One of the biggest hurdles in Africa is the cultural tendency to dismiss blood in the stool as “piles” (hemorrhoids). While hemorrhoids are common, they can mask the warning signs of a tumor. ABT News urges readers to look out for these Red Flags:

  1. Blood in Your Poo: Whether it is bright red or dark/tarry, any bleeding from the back passage must be checked.
  2. Persistent Change in Habits: If you’ve had diarrhea or constipation for more than three weeks without a clear reason.
  3. Unexplained Weight Loss: Dropping kilograms without trying is a major warning sign.
  4. Extreme Fatigue: Bowel cancer often causes “hidden” bleeding, leading to anemia (low iron) which makes you feel constantly tired.
  5. The “Lump” Feeling: A pain or a lump in your stomach or back passage.

Adapting Your Lifestyle: The African Prevention Guide

The good news? Experts estimate that nearly 40% of bowel cancers are preventable through lifestyle choices. For Africans, this means returning to the wisdom of our traditional diets while navigating modern life.

1. Embrace the “Power of Fiber”

Traditional African diets were once the gold standard for colon health. To reduce your risk, increase your intake of:

  • Traditional Greens: Ugu, Ewedu, Okra, and Spinach are packed with antioxidants.
  • Whole Grains & Tubers: Choose brown rice over white, and keep the skin on your yams and potatoes when possible.
  • Legumes: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are “scrubbing brushes” for your bowels. Aim for 30g of fiber daily.

2. Watch the “Suya” and “Kilishi”

The World Cancer Research Fund warns that processed meats (sausages, ham, bacon) and excessive red meat (beef, goat, lamb) are directly linked to bowel cancer.

  • The Rule: Limit red meat to no more than three portions a week and avoid processed meats entirely where possible. When enjoying Suya, ensure it isn’t charred to a crisp, as blackened meat contains cancer-causing chemicals.

3. Hydrate and Move

Water is essential for moving fiber through your system. Aim for 2 liters a day. Additionally, just 30 minutes of brisk walking or dancing can stimulate your gut and help maintain a healthy weight—reducing inflammation that leads to cancer.

4. Break the Taboo

We must stop being “too shy” to talk about our bowel movements. If you notice a change, tell your doctor. Don’t let “shame” be the reason for a late diagnosis.

The Bottom Line

As highlighted by the tragic story of young people like Bradley Coombes, who died at just 23 after his symptoms were dismissed, bowel cancer does not discriminate by age.

At ABT NEWS, we encourage you to listen to your body. A healthy lifestyle isn’t just about looking good; it’s about ensuring your “inner plumbing” stays clear for a long, vibrant life.
