While genetics play a role, scientists are pointing to the “Westernization” of global habits. According to research cited by the BBC, while obesity is a factor, it only explains about 13% of early-onset cases. Other culprits under the microscope include:

  • Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs): The shift from traditional “farm-to-table” meals to packaged noodles, sugary sodas, and processed meats.
  • Gut Health: Changes in our gut bacteria caused by the overuse of antibiotics and a lack of diverse fiber.
  • Late Diagnosis: In many African households, symptoms are often ignored or misdiagnosed until it is too late.

The “Piles” Trap: Symptoms Africans Should Not Ignore

One of the biggest hurdles in Africa is the cultural tendency to dismiss blood in the stool as “piles” (hemorrhoids). While hemorrhoids are common, they can mask the warning signs of a tumor. ABT News urges readers to look out for these Red Flags:

  1. Blood in Your Poo: Whether it is bright red or dark/tarry, any bleeding from the back passage must be checked.

The good news? Experts estimate that nearly 40% of bowel cancers are preventable through lifestyle choices. For Africans, this means returning to the wisdom of our traditional diets while navigating modern life.

1. Embrace the “Power of Fiber”

Traditional African diets were once the gold standard for colon health. To reduce your risk, increase your intake of:

  • Traditional Greens: Ugu, Ewedu, Okra, and Spinach are packed with antioxidants.
  • Whole Grains & Tubers: Choose brown rice over white, and keep the skin on your yams and potatoes when possible.
  • Legumes: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are “scrubbing brushes” for your bowels. Aim for 30g of fiber daily.

2. Watch the “Suya” and “Kilishi”

The World Cancer Research Fund warns that processed meats (sausages, ham, bacon) and excessive red meat (beef, goat, lamb) are directly linked to bowel cancer.
