Imagine being over 7 feet tall and having never experienced the magic of flight. For 27-year-old Rumeysa Gelgi, the world’s tallest living woman, this was her reality, until a groundbreaking journey changed her life forever. Keep your eyes glued to www.abtnews.net as we dive into this unforgettable story of record-breaking heights and heartwarming friendships!
A Historic Flight Above the Clouds
In September 2022, Rumeysa Gelgi finally achieved her dream of taking to the skies. To make this historic 13-hour journey from Istanbul, Turkey, to San Francisco, California, Turkish Airlines had to pull off an unprecedented cabin modification.
Because of her towering height of 215.16 cm (7 ft 0.7 in) and a spine condition that prevents her from sitting upright for long periods, standard airline seats were completely out of the question. The solution? The airline removed six standard economy seats from their Boeing 777-300ER and bolted a custom-built stretcher securely into the cabin.
Gelgi’s extreme stature is caused by an extremely rare genetic disorder known as Weaver syndrome, which triggers accelerated bone overgrowth. Because of this condition, her back alone measures nearly 60 cm in length! She typically relies on a wheelchair or an adapted walker to navigate her day-to-day life.
A True Record Breaker
Gelgi isn’t just known for her height; she is an absolute phenomenon. In fact, she is a Guinness World Records holder in five separate categories!
Here are the extraordinary titles she holds:
- Tallest woman living: Standing at a staggering 215.16 cm (7 ft 0.7 in).
- Largest hands on a living person (female): Her right hand spans an astonishing 24.93 cm.
- Longest fingers on a living person (female): Her fingers measure 11.2 cm.
- Longest back on a living person (female): Officially recorded at 59.90 cm.
- Longest ears: Cementing her status as an absolute physical marvel.
Despite dealing with mobility challenges and past bullying, Gelgi uses her platform to fiercely advocate for body positivity and accessibility for people of all abilities.
Two Extraordinary Heights, One Unforgettable Moment ❤️
As if her incredible flight wasn’t sensational enough, November 2024 brought a tear-jerking meeting of opposites. For the 20th annual Guinness World Records Day, Gelgi traveled to London to finally meet the world’s shortest living woman, India’s Jyoti Amge.
The visual contrast was nothing short of cinematic. While Gelgi stands at over 7 feet tall, Amge measures a tiny 62.8 cm (2 ft 0.7 in) due to a bone growth disorder called achondroplasia. Despite a massive height gap of over five feet, the pair instantly bonded. The two iconic women enjoyed a lavish afternoon tea at The Savoy Hotel in the heart of London, holding hands for memorable photographs and swapping tips on makeup and self-care.
It was a beautiful testament to the fact that while we may look different on the outside, our shared humanity brings us together.
