BARCELONA — Have we just witnessed the most prophetic photograph in the history of sports?
Imagine a picture so unbelievable that fans are convinced the footballing gods orchestrated it themselves. A forgotten snapshot from 17 years ago has just resurfaced, sending shockwaves across the globe and breaking the internet. The image? A 20-year-old Lionel Messi bathing a smiling, soapy baby in a small blue plastic tub.
The baby’s identity? None other than current FC Barcelona and Spanish national team prodigy, Lamine Yamal!
Back in 2007, a fresh-faced Lionel Messi was just beginning the meteoric rise that would crown him as one of the greatest players to ever grace the pitch. He was taking part in a charity calendar photoshoot organized by the FC Barcelona Foundation and UNICEF. Set against a striking bright red studio backdrop, Messi awkwardly but gently bathed an infant while the child’s mother, Sheila Ebana, stood close by to help.
Freelance photographer Joan Monfort, shooting for the Catalan newspaper Sport, clicked the shutter, capturing a heartwarming but seemingly ordinary moment for a good cause. No one in that room, not Messi, not the mother, and certainly not the photographer, could have possibly fathomed that the tiny baby splashing in the bubbles was destined to become a football sensation in his own right.
For over a decade, this incredible crossover was buried in the archives. The images faded into history, largely forgotten, with even Monfort losing track of who the anonymous baby was.
Then came 2024, and a viral explosion that left the sports world utterly stunned.
Yamal’s father shattered the internet when he shared one of the long-lost images on Instagram, simply captioning it: “The beginning of two legends.” Fans could hardly believe their eyes. The bubbly infant in the arms of the Argentine maestro was the very same teenager now dazzling millions with his jaw-dropping footwork for FC Barcelona and Spain.
Today, Lamine Yamal is hailed as one of football’s brightest young stars, tearing up the pitch and shattering records left and right. What started as a modest charity calendar shoot has instantly transformed into football’s most iconic, spine-tingling image, a literal passing of the torch before the torch was even lit.
It is the ultimate reminder that sometimes, reality is far stranger and more magical than fiction. Two extraordinary generations of football talent, immortalized together by a single, unpredictable twist of fate!
