Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, 54, has been shot and killed!
According to local criminal investigation spokespersons, the Bishop was struck in the chest at his residence in the central region of Mozambique., likely by a single bullet, on Saturday. Authorities have classified the killing as a “murder by gunshot,” though they have not yet released details regarding suspects or a potential motive.
The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique stated that Bishop Afonso was found lifeless under “mysterious circumstances that need to be made clear.”
Bishop Afonso, a Mozambican native who previously served in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Italy, was appointed to the diocese of Quelimane by Pope Leo XIV in July 2025.
Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, issued an official statement expressing his “deep sadness” over the tragedy, describing the bishop’s death as “an irreparable loss for Mozambican society.”
