LAGOS, NIGERIA — Distinguished novelist, academic, and prominent public intellectual, Professor Okey Ndibe, has been arrested and detained by operatives of the State Security Services (SSS).
The incident occurred early this morning immediately upon his arrival in Nigeria from his base in the United States.
SSS Awaits “Orders From Above”
Sources close to the development confirm that SSS officials at the airport have refused to clear the academic, insisting that they are strictly waiting for “orders from above” before he can be released or permitted to go about his business.
Professor Ndibe traveled to Nigeria to accomplish several critical, time-bound academic and professional duties. Close associates express deep concern that this sudden and unwarranted detention is actively impeding his itinerary and causing significant disruptions to his pre-scheduled engagements.
A Pattern of Unwarranted Harassment
This is not the first time the US-based professor has faced targeted hostility from state security forces. On previous occasions, Ndibe was subjected to similar border harassments by security officers, only for agencies to later offer formal apologies after substantial harm and loss of time had already been inflicted.
Observers and colleagues note that this latest heavy-handed treatment is particularly puzzling and unjustified. Professor Ndibe has not published any recent political journalism or controversial commentary that would warrant a security red flag or necessitate clearance from higher-ranking SSS command structures.
ABT News Note: The targeting of public intellectuals and academics upon arrival in the country raises fresh concerns regarding the state of free expression and the treatment of Nigerians in the diaspora.
