Because of historic conflicting border claims, neither nation claims sovereignty over the land, leaving it totally unclaimed.

Planting the Flag in Bir Tawil
Right around the time of Emily’s seventh birthday, this dedicated dad braved a grueling journey across the difficult desert landscape to reach Bir Tawil.
Upon arriving, Heaton did something truly sensational. As seen in the cover image, which shows the proud father standing tall with a vibrant blue flag in the rocky desert terrain (alongside a beaming portrait of the new royal herself), he planted a flag designed entirely by his family. He officially declared the territory the “Kingdom of North Sudan” and proudly named his daughter “Princess Emily.”

Of course, international law is a bit stricter than a fairy tale. Simply planting a flag and making a declaration does not legally create a recognized country, and Heaton’s proposed kingdom currently holds no official international sovereign status.
