LONDON — Governments crumble, politicians pack their bags, and political storms continually sweep through Westminster. But behind the iconic black door of 10 Downing Street, one undisputed heavyweight remains in total control: Larry the Cat.
At a staggering 19 years and 7 months old, roughly 92 in human years, the legendary Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is officially Britain’s most resilient political survivor. Having prowled the corridors of power for over 15 years, he has now outlasted an astonishing seven Prime Ministers. From David Cameron, who first brought him in, to Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer, and now Andy Burnham,. Let’s face it: politicians are temporary, but Larry is purr-manent!
THE GREAT 2023 SCARE: DEBUNKED!
Remember the panic of 2023? Rumours ran wild across the internet claiming the nation’s favourite feline was gravely ill, sending shockwaves through the British public. But Downing Street officials fiercely dismissed the speculation, shutting down the tabloid gossip and confirming the Chief Mouser was “happy and healthy”.
And boy, did he prove them right! There has never been any official record of Larry suffering from a serious long-term illness that forced him to step down. While insiders admit there is a top-secret protocol, jokingly dubbed “Larry Bridges”, for his eventual passing, Larry has made it clear he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. No Way!
A RUTHLESS ENFORCER IN HIS TWILIGHT YEARS
Originally rescued as a street-smart stray from London’s Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in February 2011, Larry was brought in with a single mission: fix No. 10’s rat problem. While his press office often jokes that his modern mousing strategy remains strictly in the “tactical planning stages”, make no mistake, this Wandsworth bruiser can hold his own.
Over the years, he has fiercely defended his territory. He famously engaged in brutal turf wars with rival Whitehall cats like Palmerston, and even sent a menacing urban fox retreating in total submission after a terrifying standoff!
Naturally, his advanced age has slowed him down just a bit. Today, his demanding daily schedule consists of extended naps, testing No. 10’s antique furniture for comfort, and greeting visiting global heavyweights, having rubbed shoulders with everyone from Barack Obama to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Even so, his instinct to keep watch over his territory has never faded, and he still occasionally gives the local mice something to sweat about. And yesterday, he caught a mouse which he proudly paraded to ward off those that are angling to write him off!
THE HEARTBEAT OF THE NATION
Through the chaos of Brexit, a global pandemic, and a wildly revolving door of government leadership, Larry has been the ultimate symbol of resilience, loyalty, and stability at the very heart of the British state. Dubbed the “night watchman of Downing Street”, he boasts an unofficial X (formerly Twitter) account with over 900,000 devoted followers.
When times get tough, the public doesn’t just look to the Prime Minister for reassurance, they look to the fluffy tabby sitting proudly on the steps. He may be moving a little slower these days, but his steely gaze and unwavering authority remain intact. Long live Larry, the undisputed King of Downing Street!
