The ₦88 Million Mystery — Outrage Trails Mr. Ibu’s Widow After Property Sales and Fresh Pleas for Donations

By ABT News Desk

The aftermath of the passing of legendary Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, has become a painful, heartbreaking spectacle. For many Nigerians observing the unfolding drama, it serves as a stark and sobering reminder of the importance of marrying right and securing one’s legacy.

A man who worked tirelessly all his life, built houses, acquired lands, and brought laughter to millions, now has his estate scattered barely two years after his tragic demise. The latest revelations surrounding his widow, Stella Maris Okafor, have sparked widespread outrage and raised a burning question: Where did all the money go?

The Missing Millions: ₦88m Gone in Record Time

Recent investigations and public call-outs by family members have exposed a massive liquidation of the late actor’s hard-earned assets. Properties worth an estimated ₦88 million were reportedly sold off shortly after his death:

  • Lagos Property: Sold for ₦60 million
  • Enugu Property: Sold for ₦17 million
  • Asaba Property: Sold for ₦11 million

Despite liquidating nearly ₦90 million in real estate, Stella Maris recently appeared in a viral video interview with content creator King Mitchy, emotionally appealing to Nigerians for financial assistance. She claimed her family was living in darkness because their electricity was disconnected over unpaid bills, that they were surviving on well water, and that her children were on the verge of dropping out of school due to unpaid fees.

Moved by her tears, sympathetic Nigerians reportedly rallied together, donating another ₦7.5 million to cover her rent and the children’s school fees.

The Viral Interview: Stammering Answers and Missing Receipts

Public sympathy quickly turned to anger when the details of the property sales surfaced. During the interview, when asked how she sustains herself and what she does for a living, Stella Maris noticeably struggled to provide a coherent answer.

“I have a page on Instagram… errrm… I sell jewelry,” she stammered. “I was an actress, but my husband said [I should stop]…”

For many Nigerians, this answer was baffling. With no clear, solid business or steady income, critics are questioning the rationale behind her decision to move her children into an expensive, high-rent estate following the actor’s death—a lifestyle she clearly could not maintain.

When pressed on whether she sold her late husband’s properties, Stella Maris initially attempted to deflect, pulling a document from an envelope. Asked to leave the paper and answer the direct question, she finally confessed:

“Yes, I sold them… but I was not the only one. Me and two of his sons sold it.”

The Widow’s Defense

In her defense, Stella Maris insists she did not secretly or illegally sell the properties. According to her, the sale was backed by a court order and executed jointly with two of Mr. Ibu’s sons, Valentine and Daniel Okafor. She also claimed she only moved into the expensive estate due to security concerns and the intense public pressure she faced after her husband’s death.

Furthermore, she alleged that the family drama began immediately after Mr. Ibu’s burial, claiming that her in-laws aggressively demanded she share the monetary donations she received during the funeral—funds she insists were meant strictly for her children’s upkeep.

“Stop Using His Name to Beg”

The controversy has drawn the ire of Mr. Ibu’s colleagues and extended family. Somtochukwu, one of Mr. Ibu’s sons, publicly called out his stepmother, accusing her of mismanaging the assets. Similarly, veteran comic actor Fred Ebere (Tenkobo), a close friend of the late Okafor, tackled Stella Maris directly, accusing her of using the late legend’s name to emotionally blackmail and extort the public.

For the average Nigerian dealing with a harsh economy, the math simply does not add up. If properties worth nearly ₦90 million were sold off legally by the widow and two sons, what happened to her share of the proceeds? Why was an expensive house rented without a sustainable source of income? And most importantly, why are everyday Nigerians—many of whom are struggling themselves—being asked to donate another ₦7.5 million to rescue a family that just liquidated a fortune?

As the dust refuses to settle on the Okafor family estate, Mr. Ibu’s legacy remains tragically overshadowed by squabbles over wealth he spent a lifetime building.
