Shock and Consternation as Top Politician is Handed 20-Year Prison Sentence for Illegal Mining

In a landmark judicial ruling that has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political landscape, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a highly influential leader of the country’s main opposition party, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour for illegal mining offences.

Boasiako, widely known by his popular moniker “Chairman Wontumi,” serves as the Ashanti regional chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He was also ordered to pay more than $10,000 (£7,450) in fines in addition to his custodial sentence.

The courtroom in the capital city of Accra was tense on Monday as the judge handed down the severe penalty. Onlookers reported that Boasiako, who has steadfastly denied the charges against him, looked visibly shocked as his fate was sealed.

He was found guilty of “assigning mineral rights without approval” and “facilitating an unlicensed mining operation” through his enterprise, Akonta Mining. Prosecutors successfully argued that the NPP politician allowed two individuals, Henry Okum and Michael Gyedu Ayisi, to conduct mining activities on the Akonta Mining concession without the mandatory approval from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

Boasiako’s conviction marks a watershed moment for the West African nation. He is the first senior political figure in Ghana to be convicted of illegal mining since the government initiated a heavy-handed crackdown on the practice in 2017.

Ghana currently stands as Africa’s leading gold producer. However, the lucrative industry carries a dark shadow: illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey,” has sparked a severe environmental disaster. Large portions of the nation’s forests, rivers, and ecosystems have been heavily polluted by unregulated extraction methods. Successive governments have struggled to curb the crisis over the years, with even military deployments yielding limited results.

Political Fallout and Allegations of Bias

The sentencing has triggered immense anger within the ranks of the New Patriotic Party, who have vehemently condemned the ruling as a politically motivated witch-hunt.

Following the conviction, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong addressed reporters, firmly rejecting the legitimacy of the court’s decision.

“The fight against illegal mining cannot become credible only when it targets political opponents in respect of whom evidence of wrongdoing does not exist,” Frimpong stated. He further alleged that the presiding judge deliberately ignored “clear evidence” that would have completely exonerated Chairman Wontumi.

According to Frimpong, the NPP’s legal team has already initiated the judicial process to appeal and challenge Boasiako’s conviction.

Environmentalists Applaud the Ruling

Conversely, environmental campaigners and civil society groups have lauded Monday’s ruling, viewing it as a vital step in the battle to save Ghana’s collapsing ecosystems. Many hope the harsh sentence will serve as a stark warning to other powerful political and business figures who secretly bankroll galamsey operations.

“It sends a strong signal that accountability is indispensable if Ghana is to protect its forests, rivers and other natural resources,” said Adib Saani, Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building.

As the legal battles prepare to move to the appellate courts, the nation remains deeply divided, watching closely to see how the fallout of this unprecedented conviction will impact both the political landscape and the ongoing war against galamsey.
