As Nigeria approaches the 2027 General Elections, anxiety is creeping into opposition circles regarding missing down-ballot candidates. But does a missing governorship or legislative candidate doom a presidential bid? Emphatically, no. We must distinguish between an organizational disadvantage and a constitutional disqualification.
The Constitutional Reality
Nigeria does not elect its President by tallying down-ballot victories. The electorate votes directly for the nation’s highest office. Under Section 134 of the Constitution, a successful candidate must secure the highest national votes and a quarter of votes in two-thirds of the states and the Federal Capital Territory.
There is no constitutional requirement that the presidential ballot must travel in convoy with the governorship and legislative ballots.
A voter can lawfully choose Party A for President and Party B for Governor. The presidential vote remains entirely up for grabs, demanding intense voter education on ballot choice versus blind party loyalty.
Lessons in Asymmetric Strategy
History frequently demonstrates that the inadequacy of traditional machinery does not make victory impossible:
- Bunker Hill (1775): Colonial forces lacked ammunition and lost the hill, but proved the British could bleed, ultimately winning the war.
- Dien Bien Phu (1954): Vietnamese forces overcame French military superiority through relentless concentration on a decisive objective.
- The Philippines (1986): The People Power movement proved that mass civilian withdrawal of consent can overwhelm entrenched incumbency.
Remediating the Organizational Deficit
Missing down-ballot candidates removes vital campaign machinery: foot soldiers, local financiers, and ward coordinators. To survive this, the opposition must heavily rely on the strategic reserve of ordinary people.
- Build Alternative Structures: Utilize volunteer groups, student bodies, trade associations, and diaspora networks.
- Educate the Electorate: Teach voters to confidently split their tickets to support their preferred presidential candidate.
- Protect the Count: Deploy trained agents and ensure vigilant public observation at every polling unit.
Winning the Ultimate Prize
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has highlighted the immense power of federal incumbency. However, the opposition’s goal should not be mere institutional capture, but democratic restoration. In the hierarchy of 2027 electoral prizes, the Presidency is the Gold Medal.
If gaps exist in the electoral formation, the opposition must not abandon the supreme objective. Mobilize, vote, and protect the lawful count. Seek ye first the Presidency, and the democratic reconstruction of Nigeria will follow—returning the nation’s institutions to their rightful owners: the Nigerian people.
