Igho “Tiny” Ubiribo, a 43-year-old Nigerian businessman and influencer, also known as Denisi or Ego, has passed away in Thailand. Mr. Ubiribo traveled to Bangkok with his wife in March and underwent a cosmetic penis enlargement procedure at a local clinic.
According to evidence presented at an inquest at the Inner West London Coroners’ Court, Mr. Ubiribo received injections of approximately 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine into his penis. Following a massage where he collapsed twice, he was taken to Sukhumvit Hospital. Despite resuscitation efforts, he died in the early hours of March 6 from a fatal pulmonary embolism.
This tragic incident highlights the growing trend and potential risks of cosmetic procedures among Nigerians, both at home and abroad. While many seek enhancements such as buttocks or breast augmentations, these procedures are not without severe risks.
The pursuit of physical enhancement has tragically claimed the lives of several Nigerians over the years. In 2020, Nigerian-British woman Abimbola Ajoke Bamgbose passed away following multiple organ failure linked to complications from liposuction surgery in Turkey. Another heart-wrenching case is that of Nneka Miriam Onwuzuligbo, a former beauty queen who died in 2019 after falling into a coma due to a failed buttocks enlargement surgery performed in Lagos.
Perhaps one of the most high-profile cases involving a Nigerian figure was the death of Stella Obasanjo, the former First Lady of Nigeria. In October 2005, she passed away in Marbella, Spain, following complications from a tummy tuck procedure, an event that shocked the nation and brought the risks of cosmetic surgery into sharp focus for many Nigerians.
These incidents underscore the importance of thorough medical consultation, rigorous research into clinics and practitioners, and a deep understanding of the potential complications before undergoing any cosmetic enhancement procedure.
