POLICE SMASH KIDNAPPING SYNDICATE: Female Victim Murdered After Gang Collects $98,700 and ₦30.5m in Ransoms

ENUGU, NIGERIA — The Enugu State Police Command has successfully dismantled a highly organized kidnapping syndicate responsible for a string of abductions across the state, resulting in the arrest of 12 suspects. In a grim revelation, police authorities confirmed that the ruthless gang murdered a female victim despite extorting massive ransoms totaling over $98,700 and ₦30.5 million from various victims.

During a press briefing and parade of the suspects at the State Police Headquarters on Friday, Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, disclosed that the arrests were the culmination of intensive human and technical intelligence-led operations spanning several months.

According to CP Giwa, the hoodlums were tracked down and apprehended between June, July, and August 2026 across multiple locations, including the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Enugu, Kogi, Nasarawa, Rivers, Kwara, and Taraba states.

A Trail of Terror and Extortion Preliminary investigations revealed a chilling timeline of the syndicate’s operations. Operating from different parts of the country, the suspects would converge in Enugu State specifically to execute their abductions before fleeing back to their respective hideouts.

The gang was highly sophisticated, relying on an Enugu-based member who operated a commercial tricycle to discreetly transport the gang members and their firearms. Another local accomplice served as an intelligence gatherer, helping the kidnappers evade security surveillance while identifying lucrative targets.

During police interrogations, the suspects confessed to their involvement in numerous high-profile kidnappings along the infamous Enugu–Ugwuogo–Opi–Nsukka Road and other areas. Their brutal campaign included:

  • April 10: The abduction of two men along the Eke–Ezinze Road in Udi LGA, where they collected a staggering $70,000 ransom.
  • April 12: The kidnapping of seven victims at Obinaofia Community in Ezeagu LGA, which yielded a ₦25 million payout.
  • May 9: The abduction of two male victims at Obioma in Udi LGA, resulting in a $28,700 ransom. Tragically, it was during this incident that the gang murdered a female victim.
  • May 25: Another kidnapping at Mgbabuowa/Aguobuowa in Ezeagu LGA, where ₦5.5 million was extorted.

Police investigations indicate that the proceeds from these horrific crimes were heavily laundered. The suspects reportedly funneled their illicit wealth into livestock, real estate properties, and lavish lifestyles, even funding overseas vacations to neighboring countries like Cameroon.

Further Arrests and Recovered Arsenal In addition to the 12 primary suspects, CP Giwa provided an update on the August 2nd abduction of Catholic seminarian Chidera Igbo and another worshipper from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Udi LGA. Following a ransom payment and the victims’ release, security operatives intensified their hunt, eventually tracking down two fleeing suspects to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Before their arrest, the Port Harcourt faction had already abducted another victim, extorting an additional ₦5 million.

The police recovered a formidable cache of weapons from the syndicate, including five AK-47 rifles, two pump-action guns, a locally fabricated firearm, 310 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, eight live cartridges, and seven AK-47 empty magazines.

A Commitment to Security CP Giwa assured the public that the suspects will face the full wrath of the law upon the conclusion of the investigation. He praised the strategic leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the steadfast support of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah in equipping the force to tackle violent crimes.

“The arrests and recoveries are a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of sustained intelligence gathering, ICT-enabled investigation, and coordinated operational policing,” Giwa stated, urging residents to continue partnering with security agencies by providing timely and actionable information.
