LAGOS, Nigeria — In a major breakthrough against cross-border narcotics trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested and repatriated fugitive drug kingpin Festus Ibewuike (also known as Chidibest Ibewuike) after a two-year international manhunt.
Ibewuike, 52, is the alleged mastermind behind the single largest heroin seizure ever recorded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, involving 49.70 kilograms of the illicit drug.
The Cross-Border Operation
Ibewuike was apprehended on September 2, 2026, at the airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, following a joint intelligence operation by the Nigerian and Beninese INTERPOL National Central Bureaus. On September 4, he was formally handed over to NDLEA operatives and returned to Nigeria to face trial.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Ibewuike had evaded justice since early 2024 by taking refuge in Mozambique, where he operated a hotel business as a cover. To manage his trafficking operations while staying under the radar, he regularly shuttled between Mozambique and Nigeria using a false identity and traveling through neighboring Benin Republic.
The 2024 Record Heroin Bust
The investigation dates back to February 2024, when NDLEA’s MMIA Strategic Command intercepted 49.70kg of heroin concealed inside cartons of metal-cutting machines at the airport’s cargo terminal import shed during a 12-day operation.
On September 5, 2026, following his repatriation, Ibewuike was taken to the NDLEA’s Central Exhibit Store in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he positively identified the seized packages. The parcels were marked with the code “ND,” an identifier that investigators had previously traced directly to his syndicate.
Syndicate Dismantled & Legal Status
The initial 2024 crackdowns severely weakened Ibewuike’s network. Key developments in the ongoing legal proceedings include:
- Key Arrests: The suspect’s wife, Confidence Ndidiamaka Ibewuike, alleged to have received the drug-laden “ND” parcels on his behalf, was previously arrested alongside other accomplices.
- Financial & Asset Seizures: Authorities froze 107 bank accounts and secured court forfeitures for multiple properties tied to the cartel.
- Court Convictions: The case was brought before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. Three members of the syndicate, Adinnu Felix Chinedu, Osita Emmanuel Obinna, and Uzochukwu Frankline have already been convicted and sentenced.
- Ongoing Trial: Three defendants, including Ibewuike’s wife, remain on trial. Ibewuike, who was previously charged in absentia, will now stand trial in person.
Commending the success of the joint operation, NDLEA Chairman Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) reaffirmed that international borders would not offer a safe haven to drug traffickers, warning that the agency will continue tracking down all remaining fugitives associated with drug cartels.
