Kuwait’s Citizenship Purge: Prominent Billionaires, Sports Icons And Africans Stripped of their Kuwaiti Citizenship!

The Promise of Gulf Prosperity

Kuwait has long stood as one of the world’s most prosperous oil-rich havens, offering unprecedented economic stability, tax-free living, and state welfare to its recognized citizenry. Over decades, the Gulf state attracted business moguls, cultural figures, elite athletes, and millions of foreign expatriates, including a vibrant African diaspora seeking trade, investment, and specialized employment opportunities. For naturalized residents, athletes who represented the national team, and prominent figures who built enterprise empires, Kuwaiti citizenship was considered the ultimate badge of security and belonging in the Gulf region.

The Sweeping Citizenship Purge

BUT that foundation of long-term security shattered when the Kuwaiti government issued six official decrees in its state gazette revoking the citizenship of 415 individuals and their dependants in a single blow. All without warning!

The crackdown, part of an expanding nationality review launched in 2024, spared neither wealth nor historical prestige. High-profile figures whose nationality certificates were removed include:

  • Mahmoud Haider: Prominent billionaire businessman and influential investor.
  • Ahmed al-Tarabulsi: Legendary World Cup goalkeeper and national sports icon.
  • Abdulmohsen Al Muhanna: Celebrated Kuwaiti singer and cultural figurehead.

The primary targets of the decrees include fraudulent marriages, forged documentation, and most critically dual nationality, which is strictly banned under Kuwaiti law.

“Decree No. 156 alone stripped 286 individuals of citizenship alongside family members who gained nationality through dependency, bringing the total campaign closer to 50,000 cases statewide.”

Why African Nationals and Diaspora Communities Are Hit So Hard

While the headline names highlight local elites, the rigid enforcement of Kuwait’s anti-dual nationality laws hits African naturalized citizens and mixed families with exceptional severity:

  1. Strict Ban on Dual Passports: Under Kuwaiti law, holding two passports is an illegal offense resulting in automatic revocation. Many naturalized citizens of African origin who retained their original passports for family, inheritance, or business ties across Africa now face complete forfeiture of their Kuwaiti status.
  2. Compounded by Severe Visa Restrictions: This citizenship purge coincides with Kuwait’s tightening immigration policies, which have shut out work permits and entry visas for workers from 24 African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia.
  3. Loss of Rights and Legal Vulnerability: Stripping citizenship from a primary holder immediately strips rights from dependants. For affected African family members, losing nationality means instant loss of healthcare, property ownership rights, employment clearance, and subsidized education, leaving hundreds at risk of sudden legal precarity or functional statelessness.

A Transformed Gulf Landscape

THEREFORE, as Kuwait pushes forward with its goal of auditing naturalization records and enforcing strict single-citizenship sovereignty, the era of flexible dual identity in the Gulf has effectively come to an end. For the thousands of affected individuals from high-net-worth billionaires to naturalized African families, the revocation decrees signal an urgent necessity to re-evaluate their legal status, property holdings, and long-term futures in the Middle East.
