ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria has registered its first confirmed case of Ebola in more than a decade. Switzerland’s foreign ministry confirmed that the patient, a 42-year-old Ugandan-born Swiss national who resides in Abuja, is the wife of a Swiss diplomat stationed in the Nigerian capital.
The patient tested positive for the virus on October 20. Health officials confirmed she has contracted the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, the same strain responsible for the ongoing outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Infection Source and Conflicting Travel Histories
The patient returned to Abuja on October 3 following a two-and-a-half-week trip to Uganda alongside her husband. She developed initial symptoms four days after her arrival and spent approximately a week across two private health facilities in Abuja before being diagnosed.
While Ugandan health authorities previously suggested that the woman had traveled to eastern DRC for business before entering Uganda, both the Swiss government, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have disputed this claim.
“She and her husband did not travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) stated, maintaining that she likely contracted the virus during her stay in Uganda.
Ugandan officials have strongly rejected suggestions that the infection originated within their borders, noting that the country was officially declared Ebola-free in August after recording 20 cases earlier in the year.

Regional Links and Genomic Sequencing
Investigators are examining a potential epidemiological connection between the Abuja patient and a recent case in Kenya. Health officials are exploring whether she may have crossed paths with a Kenyan national who died from Ebola after passing through Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport on October 3—the same day the diplomat’s wife departed.
- Shared Equipment/Exposure: The Africa CDC confirmed that investigators are examining whether both individuals were exposed through shared facilities or equipment at the airport.
- Genomic Sequencing: Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) is prioritizing genomic sequencing to determine whether her infection is genetically tied to the cases reported in Kenya or the DRC.
Dr. Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness and response at the Africa CDC, noted that while airport cross-exposure remains “one of the possible scenarios,” no formal link has been proven yet.
Containment, Tracing, and Current Status
According to Nigerian Minister of Health Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate and international health authorities, the situation remains contained with no evidence of community transmission.
| Parameter | Status / Details |
| Patient Condition | Receiving isolated treatment; showing clinical improvement. |
| Diplomat Husband | In isolation; currently asymptomatic. |
| Embassy Operations | Swiss Embassy in Abuja remains open. All 25 staff members (8 Swiss, 17 local) are healthy and do not require isolation per WHO and NCDC guidelines. |
| Contact Tracing | Nigerian authorities are expanding contact tracing beyond the 44 primary contacts identified in health facilities and airport transit. |
Regional authorities continue to emphasize the necessity of cross-border vigilance, heightened screening at transit points, and rapid contact isolation to prevent further international spread.
