EXCLUSIVE: The Shadow Broker Who Played God – The Shocking Double Life of Chief Francis Arthur Nzeribe

By ABT News Investigations Desk

LAGOS — Imagine a man who profits from both sides of a very bloody war. A man who whispers into the ears of presidents, only to orchestrate their downfall moments later. A man whose single signature shattered what is widely regarded as the freest and fairest democratic election in a nation’s history.

This is not the plot of a Hollywood espionage thriller. This was the terrifyingly real, outrageously controversial life of Chief Francis Arthur Nzeribe.

For decades, Nzeribe was Nigeria’s ultimate puppet master, a billionaire businessman, a ruthless political strategist, and a man who thrived in the darkest corridors of power. When he finally breathed his last on May 8, 2022, at the ripe age of 83, he took to the grave a vault of secrets that could rewrite African history.

The Merchant of Death: Profiting from Brothers’ Blood

Before he ever stepped onto the senate floor, Nzeribe was swimming in the lethal, high-stakes underworld of international arms dealing. While millions wept during the devastating 30-month Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), Nzeribe saw an unparalleled business opportunity.

In a chilling display of absolute ruthlessness, he reportedly sold weapons to both the Federal Military Government of Nigeria and the secessionist Republic of Biafra. As bullets flew and brother fought brother, Nzeribe was the unseen hand loading the guns on both sides of the trenches. But Nigeria was merely his playground; his shadowy arms syndicate stretched its tentacles into active conflict zones across the entire African continent.

The Phantom of Ghana: Toppling Heads of State

How does a man go from drafting speeches for a Pan-African icon to bringing down a military government?

In the swinging 1960s, Nzeribe positioned himself in Ghana as the trusted speechwriter for President Kwame Nkrumah. He was the voice behind the throne. But loyalty, it seems, was a commodity Nzeribe traded as easily as rifles. When a bloody military coup ousted Nkrumah in 1966, Nzeribe didn’t flee, he chameleonically aligned himself with the very military junta that overthrew his former boss.

The intrigue didn’t stop there. By April 1969, a massive bribery scandal erupted that shook Accra to its core. At the center of the web? Francis Arthur Nzeribe. The explosive fallout forced Ghana’s Head of State, Lieutenant General Joseph Arthur Ankrah, into a humiliating resignation. Ten years later, a newly empowered Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings had seen enough of the Nigerian provocateur. Deeming him too dangerous, Rawlings unceremoniously deported Nzeribe, forcing him to relocate his empire to the United Kingdom.

The Ultimate Saboteur: The Murder of June 12

Upon his return to a post-war Nigeria in 1970, he founded FANS Holdings Limited, building a sprawling labyrinth of corporate wealth. Yet, mere money was never enough. Nzeribe craved chaos, and in 1993, he orchestrated his magnum opus of political destruction.

Operating from the shadows, he birthed the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN), a deceptively named political pressure group with a sinister motive. Just as Nigerians prepared to celebrate the results of the June 12 presidential election, Nzeribe struck. Wielding a midnight court injunction like a scythe, he legally halted the announcement of the election results. His calculated legal ambush provided the military the exact ammunition they needed to annul the historic poll, plunging Nigeria into one of the most catastrophic political crises in its history.

The Senatorial Provocateur: Betraying His Own Blood?

You would think a man with such a notorious track record would hide from the public eye. Instead, Nzeribe reinvented himself as a Senator in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. But the leopard had not changed its spots.

In May 2000, Nigeria was burning. Violent, sectarian clashes over the proposed implementation of Sharia law had erupted in Kaduna, claiming hundreds of lives, many of them Eastern Nigerians, Nzeribe’s own Igbo kinsmen. As his people mourned their dead, Nzeribe did the unthinkable. He stood on the floor of the National Assembly and sensationally called for the impeachment of President Olusegun Obasanjo. His twisted reasoning? He claimed the President’s handling of the crisis was “detrimental to Muslims.”

The backlash was seismic. To his kinsmen, it was the ultimate betrayal, a knife twisted in the back of the grieving East. He became a political pariah, deeply despised yet undeniably untouchable.

The End of an Enigma

Francis Arthur Nzeribe remained a polarizing titan until the very end. Was he an evil genius? A ruthless pragmatist? Or a visionary who simply understood that morality has no place in the brutal game of power?

After a prolonged illness, the architect of some of Africa’s most contentious political and military crises passed away, bringing a close to his enigmatic saga. He left behind a divided legacy, admired by a select few for his razor-sharp acumen, but loathed by millions who remember him as the man who played Russian roulette with the destiny of a nation.

The puppet master is finally gone, but the strings he pulled continue to echo through the halls of history.
