Enugu State to Empower 63,000 Farmers, Hires 4,698 Teachers Amid Proactive Ebola Alert

ENUGU, NIGERIA — In a sweeping, multi-sector policy move, the Enugu State Government has announced major initiatives across agriculture, education, and public health. Key resolutions from the recent State Executive Council meeting include the free distribution of farming inputs to 63,000 smallholder farmers, the recruitment of 4,698 additional teachers for the state’s Smart Green Schools, and the immediate activation of isolation centers in response to Ebola outbreaks in Central and East Africa.

Boosting Food Security Through Agricultural Empowerment

Following the approval of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the state officially flags off the distribution of free agricultural inputs to 63,000 verified smallholder farmers today, Tuesday, July 21.

Dr. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, highlighted that the intervention aims to heavily reduce the cost of agricultural production, increase smallholder income, and improve local livelihoods.

“Last year, about 40,000 farmers benefited. This year, it is even bigger and better, as the state has now approved for 63,000 farmers to receive free agricultural inputs as intervention,” Dr. Ubru stated. The distributed packages include organic and inorganic fertilizers, agrochemicals, and free seeds for rice, maize, pepper, and tomatoes.

To ensure accountability, Dr. Ubru emphasized that beneficiaries must be duly registered smallholder farmers whose farms are captured in the state’s database. Following the governor’s official flag-off, distribution will roll out across all 260 wards under strict monitoring.

Massive Recruitment for Smart Green Schools

In the education sector, the government is reinforcing its commitment to its new educational framework by approving the employment of 4,698 new teachers.

Prof. Ndubueze Mbah noted that the massive recruitment drive is designed to ensure the high standards modeled at the Owo Campus are uniformly achieved across all 267 Smart Green Schools in the state.

To support this transition, the government is fully operationalizing the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation (CELI), situated within the Enugu State College of Education (Technical).

“This is a guaranteed strategy to institutionalise and ensure the sustainability of the Enugu education project,” Prof. Mbah explained. “It is also to ensure that every teacher in our Smart Green Schools passes through a thorough training programme at the centre, and that they can effectively implement the type of education where our children acquire skills, not only memorise.”

Additionally, CELI will serve as an incubation hub to support talented Enugu youth in developing and commercializing patentable ideas and solutions.

Proactive Health Measures Amid Ebola Outbreaks

While driving economic and educational development, the state government is taking stringent precautions regarding public health. Following reports of an Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and parts of Uganda, the State Executive Council has directed the immediate activation of all infectious disease isolation centers in Enugu.

State officials emphasized that this early directive is a strictly proactive measure, ensuring the state’s health infrastructure is fully prepared and not “caught unawares” by any potential cross-border spread of the virus.
