Criminals Jubilate As Anambra Takes Decisive Steps To Decongest Prisons With Sweeping Plea Bargain Offer

AWKA, ANAMBRA — In a landmark move that has reportedly sparked jubilation among inmates and suspects across the state, the Anambra State Government has announced a comprehensive plea bargain offer for individuals currently standing criminal trial.

This rare discretionary privilege is a decisive step aimed at massively decongesting the state’s overflowing correctional centers and overburdened court dockets.

While the offer is expansive, the state government has drawn a strict and uncompromising line regarding violent offenses. According to the official policy, the plea bargain is available to all suspects except those standing trial for:

  • Murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Armed Robbery
  • Rape

Justice Reform Aligns with Governor Soludo’s Mandate

The announcement was made via a public statement issued today by the Attorney General of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN.

According to the Attorney General, this sweeping measure is a core component of the ongoing reform within the criminal justice sector. Nweke emphasized that the initiative perfectly aligns with the mandate established by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who has prioritized the creation of a more efficient and humane justice delivery system.

“This rare discretionary privilege is part of the ongoing efforts of the State Government to decongest the correctional centers and the courts and to align with the ongoing reform of the criminal justice sector…” the statement read in part.

Immediate Directive Issued to Prosecutors

To ensure the immediate and uniform implementation of this policy, the Attorney General has taken further administrative action. A formal “Direction” has been issued to all prosecutors operating within the state.

Under this new directive, prosecutors are now strictly required to issue prescribed Plea Bargain Forms to all eligible criminal defendants before a formal plea is taken in court. This ensures that every qualifying suspect is formally presented with the opportunity to negotiate a plea before their trial proceeds.

Legal experts anticipate that this move will significantly expedite case resolutions, saving the state vast amounts of time and resources while providing a much-needed pressure release for Anambra’s prison infrastructure.
