Confusion And Despair As Anambra Sanitation Mandate Clashes with Several Town’s New Yam Festivals Slated for August 22

AWKA, NIGERIA — Traditional authorities and organizers planning New Yam (Iwa Ji) festivals across several Anambra communities on Saturday, August 22, 2026, face a major logistical hurdle following a strict state government directive ordering a mandatory statewide environmental clean-up exercise.

The declaration, issued by the Ministry of Environment, enforces a total restriction on human and vehicular movement across all 21 Local Government Areas between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM on the designated Saturday. Signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, the official release emphasizes that the three-hour state lockdown is part of the ongoing Emergency on Environment and crucial preparation for the upcoming Anambra @ 35 anniversary celebrations.

For communities that meticulously aligned their traditional calendars to host their Iri Ji ceremonies on the third Saturday of August, the restrictions present immediate friction. Early morning cultural rites, traditional market errands, family gathering logistics, and the travel schedules of invited guests arriving from neighboring towns will be effectively grounded until mid-morning. Only individuals providing registered emergency and essential services are exempted from the standstill.

According to the government, the statewide beautification drive aims to give every corner of Anambra a renewed, healthy look ahead of the milestone state anniversary. To minimize commercial disruption on the weekend, all public and private markets across the state are required to conduct their sanitation routines earlier in the week, specifically on Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21.

Local Government Chairmen and Presidents-General (PGs) of autonomous communities have been explicitly tasked with enforcing compliance and mobilizing residents for active participation within their jurisdictions. Local authorities are also instructed to arrange prompt waste collection immediately following the 10:00 AM conclusion of the exercise.

While the state government has appealed for the full cooperation of all Ndi Anambra to make the initiative a success, community leaders in affected towns must now decide whether to condense their sacred morning rites into an afternoon timeline or risk enforcement penalties from state monitoring teams.
