BREAKING HISTORY: The Untold Story of Fr. Bede Onuoha—The First Nigerian Catholic Priest to Abandon the PRIESTHOOD!

Imagine the absolute shock, the gasps in the pews, and the sheer, unadulterated consternation that swept through Eastern Nigeria in the early 1970s. The Catholic faithful were left utterly spellbound and deeply dismayed when one of their brightest and most beloved spiritual leaders did the unthinkable. He didn’t just step down—he walked away from the altar, took a wife, and eventually sat on a royal throne!

Today on ABT NEWS, we dive deep into the emotional, sensational, and deeply complex history of HRH Eze Dr. Bede Enyeribe Onuoha—the very first Igbo Catholic priest to leave the priesthood.

🌟 The Golden Boy of the Igbo Catholic Church

Ordained in 1960 for the Catholic Diocese of Owerri, Fr. Bede Onuoha was no ordinary clergyman. He was a brilliant scholar, a deeply committed missionary, and a global intellectual. Did you know he was the author of the internationally acclaimed 1965 book, The Elements of African Socialism?

Following the historic Second Vatican Council, Fr. Bede became the first Igbo priest to translate the Latin Missal into the Igbo language! Beyond his linguistic genius, he was a musical maestro. If you’ve ever sung the deeply moving Catholic hymn, “Onwere ihunanya di ka nke a na Chukwu biara n’uwa…”, you are singing the legacy of Fr. Bede Onuoha. He gave the Igbo Catholic Church its rhythm, soul, and localized spirituality.

⚡️ The Shocking Departure and the People’s Chagrin

By 1971, he was the revered Parish Priest of St. Bridget Catholic Church, Nnarambia Ahiara Mbaise. But in 1972, shortly after a transfer to Enugu, the unthinkable happened. Fr. Bede Onuoha officially resigned from the active priesthood.

The chagrin and heartbreak among the faithful were palpable. Elderly men and women who viewed the priesthood as an irreversible celestial bond were thrown into confusion. Whispers echoed through the villages. How could the man who taught them the Holy Mass in their native tongue just leave? The emotional toll on his congregants—many of whom felt a profound sense of loss and betrayal—was one of the most intensely discussed topics in the region for decades.

💍 From the Altar to the Throne

Fr. Bede didn’t just vanish into obscurity. He embraced a completely new life! He got married, raised a beautiful family with children and grandchildren, and pivoted to academia. He became a distinguished Lecturer at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Enugu, eventually rising to become the Head of the Department of Co-operative Economics and Management.

But destiny wasn’t done with him. The ex-priest eventually ascended to royalty, being crowned HRH Eze Dr. Bede Enyeribe Onuoha, the traditional ruler of Umuchieze, Ihitteafoukwu in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, Imo State!

🗣 “I Married Because I Left the Priesthood…”

Years later, Eze Bede made a profound and haunting statement that left many Catholics reflecting on the immense weight of the clerical vocation:

“I did not leave the priesthood to marry; I married because I left the priesthood.” He admitted with deep emotion that he regretted leaving his sacred calling, describing his exit as “incidental.” But what really pushed him out?

Historical rumors and unconfirmed narratives suggest intense frustration tied to the politics of the Church after the Nigerian Civil War. Following the deportation of Bishop Joseph B. Whelan, the Diocese of Owerri had no bishop for 18 months. Tensions allegedly boiled over when two prominent Mbaise priests—Rev. Fr. Ignatius Okoroanyanwu and Rev. Fr. Theophilus Nwalor—were bypassed for the bishopric, with the appointment going to the Late Bishop Mark Unegbu. Did this post-war ecclesiastical tension trigger Fr. Bede’s shocking exit? The debates continue to this day!

🙏 A Sobering Reminder

Beyond the scandal and the speculation, the extraordinary life of Eze Dr. Bede Onuoha is a powerful reminder of our shared humanity. Priests are not angels; they are men who face grueling personal battles, disappointments, and immense emotional struggles.

As the Scriptures say, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor 10:12). Fr. Bede’s story isn’t just about a man who dropped the collar—it is about a flawed, brilliant human being who gave the Church an enduring cultural and spiritual legacy that outlived his own priesthood.

What are your thoughts on this incredible piece of history? Did you or your parents witness the shockwaves of his exit in the 70s?
