BISHOP KUKAH EMERGES CHANCELLOR OF CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU UNIVERSITY: A NEW DAWN FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

AWKA — In a landmark move aimed at bridging the gap between scholarship, moral leadership, and nation-building, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, as the new Chancellor of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).

The appointment, which has drawn widespread applause from the academic and socio-political communities, was formally confirmed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, earlier this week. The historic transition was sealed today, Saturday, April 25, 2026, as Governor Soludo officially decorated the esteemed cleric at the university’s campus.

What This Portrays Academically for COOU

The emergence of Bishop Kukah as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University represents a massive paradigm shift for the state-owned institution. Academically, this strategic appointment portrays several profound implications:

1. Expansion of Global Partnerships and Networking:

Bishop Kukah is not merely a local cleric; he is a global intellectual with vast international connections. The Anambra State government explicitly noted that Kukah’s appointment is expected to leverage his extensive global network to foster international partnerships for the university. This opens the door for COOU to engage in cross-border academic research, student exchange programs, and international grants that will elevate its standing on the global academic map.

2. Infusion of Ethical Leadership and Integrity:

Universities are not just centers for intellectual development but also foundries for character building. Bishop Kukah’s long-standing reputation as a champion of social justice, peacebuilding, and anti-corruption signals a strong commitment to promoting integrity and strong moral values among the students and staff. His leadership will inspire a new generation of ethically grounded and well-rounded graduates ready to tackle Nigeria’s complex challenges.

3. Bridging Scholarship and Social Realities:

Through his think-tank, The Kukah Centre, the Bishop has pioneered research-driven advocacy aimed at interfaith harmony and policy reform. His presence at COOU is expected to heavily influence the university’s research output, encouraging academic endeavors that directly address real-world socio-economic and policy issues.

A Stellar Academic Pedigree

To understand the weight of this appointment, one must look at Bishop Kukah’s formidable academic background. The respected cleric is a quintessential scholar whose educational journey spans multiple prestigious institutions across the globe.

He studied Philosophy and Theology at St. Augustine Major Seminary in Jos, Plateau State, and obtained a diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Ibadan. He further earned a Bachelor of Divinity from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, followed by a Master’s degree in Peace Studies at the University of Bradford. In 1990, he earned his Doctorate from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

Furthermore, Bishop Kukah has undertaken executive studies and fellowships at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and Harvard University in the United States. His background is a testament to the fact that he brings an unquantifiable wealth of scholarly excellence to COOU.

Looking Ahead

As Bishop Kukah takes up the mantle of Chancellor, the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University community looks forward to a revitalized era of academic rigor, international recognition, and principled leadership. Governor Soludo’s choice echoes a profound vision for the future of education in Anambra State—one that harmonizes intellectual prowess with an unwavering commitment to societal transformation.
