AWKA, ANAMBRA — The escalating wave of violent crime in Anambra State has taken another dark turn following the arrest of a 33-year-old man, Ifechukwu Okechukwu, who allegedly murdered and secretly buried his 23-year-old girlfriend.
The chilling incident, which occurred in the bustling commercial town of Nkpor within the Idemili North Local Government Area, was brought to light thanks to the vigilance of local residents. According to authorities, credible intelligence provided by concerned members of the public led to Okechukwu’s swift apprehension before the crime could be entirely covered up.
Confirming the arrest on Monday, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing intensive interrogation.
“Police operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have taken over the case and commenced detailed inquiries to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served,” Ikenga disclosed.
This tragic event highlights a growing concern over the recent spike in heinous crimes across the state, prompting a strong response from the state’s top security echelon. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the Nkpor community for their bravery, vigilance, and timely intervention. He further appealed to all residents to continue supporting security agencies by promptly reporting any suspicious activities or criminal conduct through the Command’s emergency lines or at the nearest police station.
