LAGOS — It is a popular saying that “all that glitters is not gold,” and nothing proves this timeless proverb quite like the shocking downfall of prominent Lagos businesswoman and socialite, Funmilola Arike Ogbuaya, widely known in elite circles as ‘Ariket’.
To the outside world, Ariket was the picture of ultimate success, throwing lavish parties—such as her recent milestone 60th birthday—and rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty. But behind the glittering facade of wealth, expensive jewelry, and high-society clout lay a dark and destructive secret. Today, her glamorous lifestyle has been shattered after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) exposed her alleged involvement in a deadly illicit drug network.
Ariket’s world came crashing down when she was nailed by the NDLEA for her role in a major international trafficking syndicate. According to court proceedings at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Ariket was implicated in a conspiracy to smuggle 1.595 kilograms of cocaine out of Nigeria to Saudi Arabia.
The harsh, undeniable reality of “get-rich-quick” crimes is already showing its teeth in this case. While Ariket traded her designer outfits for the courtroom to face serious charges of conspiracy, unlawful possession, and aiding and abetting, her friend and co-conspirator, Odeyemi Omolara, is already facing the devastating consequences. Omolara pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charges and is currently rotting behind bars, serving a staggering 25-year prison sentence.
A Dire Warning to the Public: Crime Does Not Pay
For anyone looking at the flashy cars, mansions, and lavish birthdays of socialites and feeling pressured to make fast money, Ariket’s story is a massive wake-up call.
Do not be deceived by the superficial wealth you see around you. Many who flaunt extravagant lifestyles are walking on thin ice, funding their “success” through illegal, blood-stained avenues that eventually lead to their utter ruin.
Get-rich-quick schemes—especially drug trafficking, internet fraud, and smuggling—will inevitably lead to maximum security prison. There is no peace in illicit money. A 25-year jail term quickly strips away all the VIP party invitations, the social media praise, and the luxury, leaving behind nothing but a tarnished name and decades of regret.
Let this be a resounding lesson to the youths and the general public: Do not sell your freedom and your future for a momentary flash of wealth. Hard work, patience, and integrity will never go out of style. The glittering life of a drug kingpin may look appealing from the outside, but it is a deadly trap.
