Before the roaring crowds in Miami, before the 25 million Instagram followers, and long before standing toe-to-toe with Lionel Messi on football’s greatest stage, Josimar José Évora Dias was an ordinary man doing whatever it took to make ends meet.
Better known to the world today by his childhood nickname, Vozinha (“little granny”), his story is one of unwavering resilience. Raised by his grandparents in Mindelo, Cabo Verde, Vozinha faced a reality where football simply couldn’t pay the bills. To put food on the table, the towering 6-foot-2 athlete drove a local bus and spent his days working as an electrician. For years, the spotlight of professional football eluded him, but the dream never faded.
It wasn’t until he was 25 years old—an age when many top players are already at the peak of their careers—that Vozinha finally signed his first professional contract. Over the next decade, he quietly built his credibility as a journeyman across modest leagues in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal.
The Ultimate Test in Miami
At 40 years old, arriving as a free agent, Vozinha did the unthinkable. He commanded the goal for debutants Cabo Verde in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leading his nation to an incredibly historic knockout stage berth.
On July 4, 2026 (local time in Miami), a true David vs. Goliath narrative unfolded. Vozinha, the former electrician, stood in goal against the defending world champions, Argentina—and directly in the path of his lifelong idol, Lionel Messi.
Though Messi found the back of the net in the 29th minute, Cabo Verde refused to back down. They stunned the world by fighting back twice to push Argentina into extra time. Throughout the 120-minute thriller, Vozinha put on the performance of a lifetime, registering 8 brilliant saves, four of which directly denied Messi from point-blank range and on free-kicks.
A Hero’s Exit
Argentina ultimately prevailed 3-2 after a 111th-minute heartbreaking own-goal, but the final whistle couldn’t extinguish Cabo Verde’s pride.
Vozinha walked off the pitch with his head held high, swapping shirts with Messi. The Argentine legend even sought out the Cabo Verdean keeper after the match, hugging him and saying, “You are great. Your people should be proud of you.”
He may not have defeated his idol, but Vozinha’s heroic tournament proved that it is never too late. With a skyrocketing 25 million social media followers and the admiration of millions around the globe, the former bus driver showed us all that dreams, hard work, and courage can elevate any ordinary person to absolute greatness.
