THE BILLIONAIRE’S CURSE: How Aristotle Onassis Made All The Money In The World—and Died with Nothing to Show for It

By ABT News Investigative Desk

He was the Golden Greek, the ultimate puppet master of the 20th century, a man who built an empire from the ashes of his youth. But behind the tinted sunglasses and the Mediterranean yachts lay a devastating truth. Aristotle Onassis manipulated his life with a lethal combination of an ice-cold heart and undeniable charm.

For decades, the public only saw the glamour. The private jets, the Christina O superyacht, the endless champagne. But what the world didn’t see was the ruthless, calculating nature of a man who treated people like acquisitions. Onassis spent a lifetime—and a colossal fortune—courting and conquering two of the most famous, untouchable women in the world: opera legend Maria Callas and American royalty Jackie Kennedy.

Yet, for all his billions, his ultimate legacy with these women was a spectacular failure.

The Hidden Cruelty Behind the Charm

The world knows Onassis as a shipping magnate, but few know the extreme lengths he went to in order to secure his status. He was a man driven by deep insecurities, fueled by a bitter lifelong rivalry with fellow shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos. To Onassis, women weren’t just partners; they were trophies to be displayed to his enemies.

His relationship with Maria Callas was notoriously toxic. While the paparazzi snapped photos of them laughing in Monaco, behind closed doors, Onassis was systematically breaking the opera diva’s spirit. He weaponized his charm, drawing her away from her husband and her career, only to treat her with staggering cruelty once he had her. There are dark historical whispers that Callas even gave birth to a child by Onassis in 1960—a baby boy who died hours after birth—a tragedy Onassis allegedly brushed off as he continued his relentless pursuit of power.

The Ultimate Trophy: Jackie O

When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Onassis saw an opportunity that his ice-cold heart couldn’t resist. He didn’t just want a famous woman; he wanted the most famous grieving widow on the planet.

He courted Jackie with astronomical wealth, blanketing her in jewels and security. But what the public didn’t know was the intensely transactional nature of their marriage. It wasn’t a fairy tale romance; insiders have long alleged it was a cold, calculated contract. Onassis got the ultimate status symbol, and Jackie got a financial fortress for her and her children.

A Fortune Spent, An Empty Legacy

Despite the millions spent on diamonds, private islands, and lavish lifestyles, Onassis’s grand design crumbled. Sadly, there wasn’t much to show for his exhaustive efforts. He desperately craved a lasting dynasty, yet he never had children with either Callas or Kennedy.

His biological heirs from his first marriage suffered immense tragedies—his son Alexander died in a plane crash, a blow that shattered Onassis, and his daughter Christina lived a famously unhappy life. The women he spent a fortune to conquer ultimately slipped through his fingers.

The Final, Devastating Insult

The ultimate proof of his failure didn’t come until long after his death. To make matters worse, when Jackie passed away in 1994, her funeral in New York was a global event, attended by dignitaries, politicians, and the elite.

The name “Onassis” wasn’t mentioned at the funeral. Not once.

She was remembered as a Kennedy. She was buried next to JFK at Arlington National Cemetery. Aristotle Onassis, the man who had bought her the world, was completely erased from her final chapter.

In the end, Aristotle Onassis proved that while an ice-cold heart and undeniable charm can buy yachts, islands, and even marriages, it cannot buy a legacy. He conquered the world’s most famous women, but history—and the women themselves—had the final word.
