World Cup Miracle: Diplomatic Intervention Reunites Cape Verde Hero Vozinha with Mother in Miami USA

MIAMI — Cape Verde’s historic World Cup debut has taken a deeply emotional turn off the pitch. Josimar Dias, affectionately known to millions of football fans as Vozinha, is set for a heartwarming reunion with his mother ahead of the national team’s crucial Group H clash against Uruguay this Sunday in Miami.

The surprise reunion comes on the heels of a high-profile diplomatic intervention by top United States government officials, correcting a visa hurdle that initially kept the player’s family apart.

From Tearful Post-Match to Triumphant News

The 40-year-old veteran shot-stopper became an overnight global sensation on Monday following a masterful, player-of-the-match performance that secured a historic 0-0 draw against powerhouse Spain. Yet, speaking to reporters after the game, an emotional Vozinha wept openly, revealing that his mother had been unable to travel to the tournament due to the restrictive costs of securing a US visa.

“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents. Unfortunately, they were not here… They were everything to me,” Vozinha shared. “And also because of my mum. She didn’t manage to be here because of the visa. Because of the money you have to pay for the visa, we didn’t manage it in time. I would like her to be here.”

Cape Verde is one of five nations participating in the tournament whose citizens are subject to a strict US government mandate requiring a refundable visa deposit of roughly £11,000. While tournament ticket holders were exempted from this rule back in May, the financial and administrative timeline proved too tight for Vozinha’s family to navigate before kickoff.

Now, that heartbreak has turned to joy. Speaking from her home in Sao Vicente, his mother, Ana Candida Evora, confirmed that her bags are packed for Miami.

“I’m very happy,” Evora told reporters. “This is happening so fast, but I’m quite happy anyway. I’m going to see my son playing in the World Cup, God willing. I’m going there to support him, to give him strength and courage. I’m going to give him a hug after the game.”

Political Heavyweights Step In

The rapid turnaround was catalyzed by US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who coordinated directly with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to cut through the bureaucratic red tape.

In a statement posted to X, Jeffries emphasized the human element of the beautiful game:

“No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history. I spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and asked the State Department to do everything in its power to ensure that his mother can attend Cape Verde’s next match. It is a privilege to announce that Vozinha’s mom will be able to secure a visa in time… All fees have been waived consistent with official policy.”

A US State Department official later verified the update, noting that their visa team in Praia, Cape Verde’s capital, has been working directly with Evora to finalize her travel logistics.

A Late-Blooming Legend

At 40 years and 12 days old, Vozinha has written his name into football folklore as the oldest player to ever appear in a nation’s debut World Cup match. His journey to the grandest stage in sports is a testament to sheer perseverance.

“I started playing professional football when I was 25 years old… It was too late for a person like me,” Vozinha admitted. “I thought about leaving the national team, but then I continued because of this dream.”

With 91 international caps and a journeyman career spanning leagues in Slovakia, Angola, Moldova, and Cyprus, the Chaves goalkeeper has captured the hearts of fans worldwide, gaining millions of new social media followers since Monday’s clean sheet.

With his mother now heading to the stands at Hard Rock Stadium, Vozinha and the Blue Sharks will look to channel this emotional boost when they face heavyweights Uruguay on June 21, followed by a final Group H fixture against Saudi Arabia on June 27.
