ONE THRONE, TWO KINGS!: Inside the Defiant Monarchical Crisis Rocking Awka, Anambra State’s Capital City

For years, Awka—the administrative capital of Anambra State—has been caught in a bizarre, deeply polarizing, and culturally scandalous gridlock. It is a city with a single, ancient traditional stool, yet it is ruled by two fiercely competitive men who both claim the title of supreme traditional ruler.

On one side sits His Majesty, Obi Dr. Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II), a nonagenarian and retired Nigerian Air Force pioneer aviator who holds the official government staff of office. On the other side is Chief Austin Ndigwe (Uzu Awka / Ezeuzu III), a wealthy, highly influential, and fiercely defiant powerhouse who claims to be the true custodian of the people’s mandate.

This is the explosive, inside story of how a prime minister turned on his king, why successive governments have struggled to quell the rebellion, and how the fabric of an ancient kingdom has been torn apart.

The Bitter Rivals for the Awka Stool

1. The Genesis: How Austin Ndigwe Reached for the Crown

To understand how Awka ended up with two kings, one has to look at the deep structural fractions that plagued Obi Gibson Nwosu’s reign from its inception in 1997.

Though highly respected globally as an educated ex-military pilot, certain elite power blocs inside Awka’s traditional Ozo Society were always uneasy with Nwosu. Critics whispered about his maternal ancestry trace outside the town, his marriage to a non-local, and his perceived preference for the Catholic Church over ancient cultural deities.

The boiling point occurred in April 2017. A powerful faction of the Ozo Kingmakers (the Essel-led faction) accused Obi Nwosu of systemic constitutional breaches and “dethroned” him.

Enter Chief Austin Ndigwe. Ndigwe was not an outsider; he was actually Obi Nwosu’s Onowu (Traditional Prime Minister). Following a bitter fallout between the two, Ndigwe aligned with the rebel chiefs. On November 15, 2017, in a swift and shocking move that sent shockwaves through Anambra, this splinter faction formally crowned Ndigwe as Eze Uzu III.

Ndigwe justified his ascension by claiming that the village next in line for the throne lacked a viable candidate, forcing kingmakers to look to him—even though purists argue his own village was technically ineligible under rotational rules.

2. Why Has Nobody Been Able to Resolve the Crisis?

If traditional institutions are sacred, why has this impasse lasted for nearly a decade? The answer lies in a combination of deep-pocketed funding, fractured traditional structures, and intense polarization.

  • A Fractured Elite: The influential Ozo Awka society is split down the middle. One half views Ndigwe’s crowning as an unmitigated abomination, while the other half insists that Obi Nwosu abdicated his duties to ancient customs, making his removal legitimate in their eyes.
  • The Power of Grassroots Patronage: Austin Ndigwe commands substantial wealth and enjoys fierce support among vast networks of Awka youth and local community groups. He operates a parallel court, hands out massive philanthropic favors, and exudes a regal confidence that makes him appear, to his followers, like the functional king of the city.

3. The Government’s Battle with Defiance

A common question asked across Nigeria is: Why can’t the Anambra State Government simply call Austin Ndigwe to order?

The reality is that the state government has tried repeatedly, but Ndigwe has masterfully weaponized legal delays and public defiance. Under former Governor Willie Obiano and current Governor Prof. Charles Soludo, the state has continuously reiterated that Nigerian law only recognizes Obi Gibson Nwosu.

The conflict re-escalated into a national farce when Ndigwe began operating internationally and conferring high-profile chieftaincy titles—including a widely publicized title given to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. The Soludo administration immediately struck back, declaring the title “fake, illegal, and an impersonation of state authority.”

In April 2026, Governor Soludo’s official Commission of Enquiry released a definitive White Paper confirming Obi Nwosu as the only authentic monarch. Soludo openly warned that anyone parading himself otherwise faces immediate imprisonment.

Yet, Ndigwe’s response was jaw-dropping. In a viral video recorded at a village square in May 2026, Ndigwe looked directly into the camera and dared the Governor:

“My people duly crowned me the Obi of Awka Kingdom, and I will not shy away from it. If performing the function given to me by my people is what would make me go to jail, I am ready for it.”

By drawing a distinction between being the “King of Awka” versus a government-certified “King of Anambra,” Ndigwe has exploited a gray area between indigenous legitimacy and statutory law. This makes a forceful arrest highly sensitive in a state capital prone to civil unrest.

4. The Toll on Awka and Anambra State

This institutional cold war has yielded a damning set of consequences for the region:

  • Cultural Desecration: Traditionalists claim the split has deeply angered ancestral deities. In 2017, the Chief Priest of the prominent Imo-Awka deity died under highly mysterious circumstances right in the middle of the initial crowning crisis—an event elders called an ominous spiritual penalty.
  • Civil Unrest: The city has repeatedly witnessed gridlocked traffic, street brawls, and massive youth protests whenever both camps attempt to celebrate competing traditional festivals (like the annual Egwu Uzu).
  • An Institutional Farce: As the administrative capital, Awka is meant to set an example for community governance. Instead, its divided house creates a massive security headache and devalues the integrity of the entire Igbo traditional system.

Flashpoints in the Battle for the Awka Kingdom

The Split April 2017

A dissident faction of the Ozo Awka Council claims to dethrone Obi Gibson Nwosu over alleged constitutional violations.

The Parallel Crowning November 2017

Chief Austin Ndigwe, the former Traditional Prime Minister, is crowned as a parallel king (Eze Uzu III), sparking widespread protests and warnings from the Obiano administration.

The Soludo Clampdown October 2022

Newly elected Governor Charles Soludo officially warns that presenting oneself as king without state recognition is a criminal offense under the law.

The Ojukwu Title Scandal January 2026

Anambra State Government disowns a chieftaincy title conferred by Ndigwe on Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, labeling Ndigwe an outright impostor.

The White Paper Decree April 2026

Governor Soludo releases an official judicial White Paper permanently reaffirming Obi Gibson Nwosu as the sole legitimate monarch as he celebrates his 90th birthday.

The Jailhouse Dare May 2026

Austin Ndigwe releases a viral video boldly mocking Soludo’s threats of arrest, declaring he is fully prepared to go to prison rather than yield his throne.

5. The Way Forward

Awka cannot move forward as a divided house. To end this embarrassing saga, a three-pronged approach is urgently required:

  1. Enforcement of the 2026 White Paper: The Anambra State Government must move past verbal warnings. If parading oneself as an uncertified monarch violates the Traditional Rulers Act of the state, the rule of law must be enforced evenly, regardless of the claimant’s wealth or political connections.
  2. Unification of the Ozo Society: Neutral community elders must broker an internal peace treaty within the Ozo Society. The kingmakers must return to a singular, binding constitution that leaves no room for rogue crownings.
  3. A Centralized Palace: As Governor Soludo proposed in May 2026, Awka needs a unified, institutionalized palace that belongs to the stool itself, rather than individual monarchs running separate courts from their private villas.

Until the state asserts its constitutional monopoly on law and order, the capital of Anambra will remain a mocking symbol of a kingdom with two crowns, zero peace, and a completely fractured heritage.
