Court Jails Pastor For Ordering Parents To Starve Their Children To Death

MOMBASA, Kenya — In one of the most chilling chapters of religious extremism in modern history, a Kenyan court has delivered a landmark verdict against doomsday preacher Paul Mackenzie.

On Monday, High Court Judge Diana Kavedza Mochache convicted Mackenzie and nearly 30 of his associates on multiple counts of murder, holding them criminally responsible for the deaths of 190 children and one adult in what has come to be known as the Shakahola Forest massacre.

The ruling, handed down after an intensive, exhaustive multi-year investigation and a gripping eight-hour court session in Mombasa, marks a major milestone in a tragedy that has deeply shaken Kenya and shocked the global community. Sentencing for Mackenzie and his co-accused has been scheduled for November 6.

A Twisted “Hierarchy of Death”

According to prosecutors and evidence presented in court, Mackenzie—a former taxi driver turned self-proclaimed pastor of the Good News International Church—orchestrated a horrifying, systematic campaign of deadly fasting. Operating out of an 800-acre ranch deep within the remote Shakahola Forest near the coastal city of Malindi, Mackenzie persuaded his followers that starving themselves and their families was the only way to “meet Jesus” before an impending apocalypse.

Investigators detailed a calculated, phased “hierarchy of death” imposed upon the commune. Cult members were instructed to fast sequentially, starting with young children, followed by teenagers, women, and finally men. Testimony revealed that children were frequently isolated and systematically denied food while parents watched, and post-mortems later showed that many young victims also suffered from severe trauma, including asphyxia, neck compression, and head injuries.

Cult members lived in primitive, makeshift shelters made of polythene sheeting and thatch, partitioned into areas bearing biblical names like “Jerusalem” and “Judea”. Mackenzie had explicitly forbidden his flock from sending their children to school or seeking medical care at hospitals, branding such institutions as “satanic”.

Unearthing the Horrors

The full scale of the nightmare began to unravel in March 2023, when a local tip-off led police to discover that parents had starved their children to death inside the forest on the cult leader’s direct orders. Subsequent sweeps of the sprawling forest uncovered dozens of mass graves containing hundreds of decomposing bodies. While Monday’s specific murder convictions account for 191 victims, the wider investigation into the Shakahola tragedy has unearthed the remains of well over 400 people, making it one of the deadliest cult-related disasters in modern history.

In court on Monday, Mackenzie sat impassively alongside his wife and co-accused, dressed in a striped polo shirt and red trousers, staring blankly ahead as the verdict was read. Defense attorneys argued that the prosecution’s case relied heavily on circumstantial evidence and inconclusive forensic findings, but the bench ultimately ruled that the evidence clearly demonstrated an organized, enforced system of fatal deprivation.

A Nation Mourns and Demands Reform

Outside the courthouse, grieving relatives who had traveled from rural coastal communities gathered to witness justice unfold. Francis Wanje, who lost eight family members—including two grandchildren—to the cult, voiced the heavy emotional toll carried by survivors.

“It has been really a heavy thing for us as a family, and it has really taken us very far in terms of psychological problems,” Wanje told reporters. “I was hoping for this particular day.”

The massacre has triggered intense nationwide scrutiny over how Mackenzie—who had previously been arrested and questioned by authorities in 2017 and 2019 over radicalization and child deaths—managed to evade effective law enforcement oversight for years. The disaster has fueled persistent calls across Kenya for sweeping regulatory crackdowns and tougher government oversight of religious organizations and unregulated cults.

As the legal proceedings enter their final phase ahead of the November 6 sentencing, the conviction of Paul Mackenzie closes a dark chapter of manipulation and tragedy, leaving a grieving nation to pick up the pieces.
