ABUJA — Absolute panic has reportedly gripped the corridors of power in Aso Rock. As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first term inches toward its expiration next year, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has found its re-election bid hitting a massive, unyielding gridlock. Stripped of credible ideas and completely devoid of any impressive track record, the ruling party is desperately scrambling for a lifeline to convince the Nigerian electorate.
But the reality on the ground is pretty grim and the voters are wide awake, eagerly waiting to seize the chance to cast the decisive votes that will sack the APC government.
A Comatose Economy and Crumbling Infrastructure
Across the nation, the echoes of hardship are deafening. The Nigerian economy, once hailed as the giant of Africa, is currently in a comatose condition. The government appears completely clueless on how to revive it.
Vital sectors have been left to rot. Our public hospitals are hopelessly derelict, lacking basic equipment and medications to save lives. Education, the bedrock of any progressive society, has been effectively paralyzed as schools are perpetually shut down by endless strikes.
Furthermore, the manufacturing sector is gasping for breath. With no reliable energy to power industries, factories are shutting down, leading to a catastrophic lack of jobs.
A Disillusioned Populace
The human toll of this administrative failure is devastating. Millions of vibrant, educated Nigerian youths wander the streets, entirely disillusioned by a system that has offered them no future. At the other end of the spectrum, the nation’s senior citizens are abandoned; elderly men and women who served this country in their prime are denied their regular pension payments, left to face hunger in their twilight years.
A Fiscal Black Hole
Under the current administration, the nation’s trade balance has flatlined. Exports are drastically dwindling, while an over-reliance on imports continues to collapse the national treasuries.
With no innovative solutions to generate wealth, the government has resorted to a suffocating two-pronged policy: brutally over-taxing an already impoverished populace and engaging in reckless, astronomical borrowing with absolutely no visible prospects of ever paying the debts back.
Rivers of Blood: The Security Nightmare
Perhaps the most heartbreaking failure of the current administration is the total collapse of national security. Insecurity is at an all-time high. Innocent Nigerians are being routinely massacred in their own ancestral homes. Kidnapping has transitioned from a fringe crime to a booming, everyday enterprise, while ruthless bandits subject citizens in rural and urban areas alike to untold misery. The primary duty of government is the protection of lives and property, yet on this front, the ruling party has scored a spectacular zero and failed woefully.
The Strategy of Distraction
The great tragedy of the upcoming election cycle is the ruling party’s response to its own failures. Recognizing that they have absolutely nothing of substance to use in convincing the voters, the APC has resorted to a dark political strategy. Rather than campaigning on a non-existent record of success, they have unleashed senseless and ceaseless attacks aimed at decimating the opposition.
By aggressively targeting rival political figures, the ruling party hopes to distract the masses from the hunger, the insecurity, and the economic ruin that has characterized their tenure.
The People’s Verdict
However, the era of blind loyalty is over. This desperate strategy of intimidation and distraction will not work.
The scales have fallen from the eyes of the electorate. From the bustling streets of Lagos to the markets of Kano, from the heartlands of the East to the creeks of the Delta, the consensus is clear. The Nigerian people are organizing, mobilizing, and getting ready to decisively vote out the ruling party at the coming general elections.
The APC may be in panic mode, but for the millions of Nigerians surviving this gridlock, 2027 cannot come soon enough.
