The Violent Slaughter of Four Toddlers that shocked a Nation!

KAMPALA, UGANDA – In a ruling that has sent waves of relief through a grieving community, the High Court has sentenced 38-year-old Christopher Okello Onyum to death by hanging for the brutal murder of four toddlers at a Kampala nursery school.

The sentencing took place on Tuesday at a makeshift High Court convened specifically in the Ggaba community, the very site where the horrific events unfolded earlier this month. Justice Alice Komuhangi Khauka delivered the capital sentence to the sounds of cheers from local residents who had gathered to witness justice being served.

A Morning of Horror On April 2, Onyum who is a dual Ugandan and United States citizen, entered the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program. Once inside, he launched a savage attack with a kitchen knife, fatally stabbing four infants: Eteku Gideon, Keisha Agenorwoth, Sseruyange Ignatius, and Odeke Ryan. All the victims were aged between one and two years old.

“He targeted them in their defenseless state and went ahead to slaughter them like animals,” Justice Khauka said during her judgment. “He had no fear, no shame, no consideration for human life.”

The ‘Human Sacrifice’ Motive The trial revealed chilling details regarding Onyum’s motivations. Prosecutors told the court that during initial interrogations, Onyum admitted to the killings, describing them as a “human sacrifice” he believed would grant him supernatural wealth.

However, as the trial progressed, Onyum changed his plea to not guilty. His defense team argued that he was suffering from severe mental illness at the time of the attack, claiming he was unable to form the intent to kill and should be acquitted on grounds of insanity.

Justice Khauka ultimately rejected this defense, stating that evidence proved Onyum was “very sane” on the day of the massacre. She further noted his lack of contrition throughout the proceedings.

“I have also considered that the convict has not shown any remorse at all, because I would have at least expected an apology from him to the families of the babies,” the Justice remarked.

Overwhelming Evidence The prosecution’s case was bolstered by 18 witnesses and a mountain of forensic and digital evidence. Key exhibits included:

  • DNA Evidence: Forensic reports linked Onyum’s DNA to the handle of the murder weapon.
  • CCTV & Data: Surveillance footage tracked Onyum’s movements leading up to the school, while mobile phone call data placed him at the exact scene of the crime.
  • Eyewitness Accounts: Two daycare staff members provided harrowing testimony, identifying Onyum as the man they saw attacking the infants.

A Rare Sentence While the death penalty remains legal in Uganda, it is rarely executed. The last recorded judicial execution in the country took place in 2005. Onyum’s dual citizenship and the high-profile nature of the case have drawn international attention to the proceedings.

Under Ugandan law, Onyum has 14 days to lodge an appeal against the conviction and sentence. For now, he remains in custody as the families of Gideon, Keisha, Ignatius, and Ryan begin the long journey toward healing.
