ANAMBRA IN PERIL: How Soludo’s Government Is Watching Anambra Crumble As Kidnappers, Robbers, And Decay Take Over The Light Of The Nation

AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE — What was once revered as the beacon of commerce, education, and development in Southeastern Nigeria has degenerated into a theater of lawlessness and infrastructure collapse. From the bustling streets of Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi to the quiet towns of Ogidi, Nkpor, and Abatete, everyday citizens in Anambra State now live at the mercy of non-state actors and utter administrative neglect.

As Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration faces growing public frustration, residents are asking a single, agonising question: Has the state government completely run out of options?

A Sunday Night Terror: The New Face of Digital Kidnapping in Nkpor

Nothing underscores the breakdown of law and order in Anambra State more vividly than a horrific incident that unfolded on Sunday night in Nkpor.

A local resident identified as Emma Nnoli had gone out with close friends to a neighborhood beer parlour to unwind after a stressful week. Laughter rang out, banters were thrown freely, and bottles of Hero beer flowed with Nkwobi and pepper soup as the group enjoyed what should have been a peaceful Sunday night.

Within minutes, that peaceful evening turned into a living nightmare. Lord have mercy!

A gang of heavily armed men stormed the venue, rounding up Emma and his friends at gunpoint. Before anyone could raise an alarm or reach for help, the victims were force-marched into the darkness and taken to an uncompleted building along the deserted Ogidi/Abatete road.

What followed was a terrifying display of impunity. The armed abductors did not wait for days to negotiate ransom through traditional channels. Instead, they forced the victims to unlock their mobile banking applications on the spot. One by one, under the threat of execution, the victims were ordered to drain their life savings. Those without banking apps were forced to call friends and family members to make immediate transfers into accounts designated by the gang, failing which summary execution would follow!

The payout was staggering:

  • One victim was forced to transfer ₦10 Million on the spot.
  • Another victim surrendered ₦5 Million.
  • Emma and others were coerced into transferring millions more.

It was a veritable “festival of cash” for the criminals, who walked away richer by tens of millions of Naira in a single night before driving off with a victim’s vehicle. Whether orchestrated by seasoned kidnapping syndicates or desperate cyber-criminals turned armed bandits, one terrifying truth remains: in Anambra today, no place is safe, and criminals operate entirely unchallenged.

Terror Across the Circles: Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi Under Siege

The harrowing ordeal in Nkpor is not an isolated event. Reports floating through local Anambra security and social circles reveal a systemic wave of crime sweeping across the state’s major economic hubs.

In Awka, the state capital, targeted abductions outside residential quarters and popular lounges have become a weekly routine. Victims are routinely held at gunpoint until maximum daily bank transfer limits are reached or POS operators are brought in to clear out account balances.

In Onitsha and Nnewi, traders and small business owners report rising extortion by armed gangs who operate in broad daylight without any visible police or state security intervention. The sense of security that once allowed commerce to thrive in the state has evaporated, replaced by an ominous dusk-to-dawn anguished anxiety.

Derelict Hospitals, Crumbling Schools, and Washed-Away Roads

The security crisis is compounded by a total breakdown in basic public infrastructure and social services across the 21 local government areas.

  • Education in Freefall: Citizens recall with nostalgia the era under former Governor Peter Obi, when Anambra consistently ranked #1 nationwide in WAEC and NECO examinations through massive investments in basic and secondary education. Today, under Soludo, public schools face acute staffing shortages, dilapidated structures, and declining academic outcomes, dropping precipitously from their once-enviable position.
  • Decaying Healthcare: General hospitals across the state have turned into mere consulting clinics. Reports from rural communities indicate a severe lack of essential drugs, broken-down diagnostic equipment, and an exodus of medical professionals frustrated by poor working conditions and unpaid entitlements.
  • Substandard Infrastructure: Roads recently constructed or rehabilitated have proven unable to withstand seasonal rainfall. Massive gullies and washed-away asphalt have cut off vital trade arteries along the Onitsha-Owerri axis and inner roads in Nkpor and Ogidi, leaving motorists stranded and vulnerable to night-time attacks.
  • Power Blackouts: Electricity supply remains abysmal, paralyzing small businesses and artisanal workshops that form the backbone of Anambra’s informal economy.

Sleeping on Duty? APGA and the Governance Void

As Anambra deteriorates, public anger is turning toward the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). With national political alignments shifting and major elections on the horizon, citizens feel totally abandoned by a party leadership that appears completely detached from the daily suffering on the ground.

Critiques are mounting over Governor Soludo’s inability to deliver on his promised “Smart Megacity” vision. Instead of the promised Anambra Dubai Taiwan economic transformation, Anambra residents are left with broken roads, dark streets, derelict public institutions, and an unchecked surge in violent extortion and kidnapping spree.

If immediate, decisive measures are not taken to flush out criminal elements and overhaul decaying public infrastructure, the “Light of the Nation” risks being plunged into complete darkness.
